A.M. SCRAMBLE: Feds Seize Funds, South Africa Winner, Coming to TV

Halloween is over. You’ve quietly put your really cute Boba Fett costume away for another year. That means it’s only 25 days until Thanksgiving and 26 days until the Black Friday madness. Until then, we’re happy to bring some of the news from the weekend in the Monday morning A.M. Scramble. Enjoy.

Federal Prosecuters Move to Have $553,000 Seized from Online Payment Processor

In what is most certainly not good news for online poker players it appears that Federal prosectures are using the recently upheld Washington State law making online poker a felony to seize over half a million dollars from an online payment processor.

The company in question, Secure Money Inc., allegedly sent payments to Washington State poker players that were playing online in violation of the law. A civil complaint filed in October claims that Secure Money Inc. sent a payment to an undercover agent, amongst others, who had played at UB.com. This news comes only weeks after PokerStars.com announced it would no longer allow players in Washington State to play on their site.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer broke the story early Monday morning. You can read that story here.

The WSOP Circuit Main Event in South Africa is Over. Somebody Tell WSOP.com Please?

Warren Zackey Wins WSOP Circuit South Africa

The World Series of Poker is in the midst of a busy spell. A record-setting WSOP Circuit event at Hammond Horseshoe just wrapped up, the next set of WSOPC events is underway in Biloxi and then there’s this little November Nine thing going on this week. They also had an event in South Africa – the first WSOP Circuit event not in the United States – but you wouldn’t know that based on the news on WSOP.com.

The Main Event, a $5,000 buy-in tournament, attracted 188 players and was won by Warren Zackey. He banked an impressive 1,604,212 South African Rand ($231,00 US) but that wasn’t the biggest score of his career. In 2009 he finished 22nd in the WSOP Main Event for $352,832. The runner-up was Melanie Banfield. The event did attract some big names including Gus Hansen, Maria Ho, Beth Shak and Vanessa Rousso. The only news site providing coverage was BLUFF South Africa and their live blog account of the final table is available here.

Regulated Canadian Online Poker Room Fizzling

It was going to be a big deal in Canada. Like Celine Dion, Michael J. Fox and Steve Nash big. Earlier this year the provincial online gaming authorities in British Columbia, Quebec, Newfoundland-Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia announced plans to work together to form a regulated and legal online poker option for Canadian players.

Now, just months away from the expected launch, it appears that the relationship built on providing liquidity to the network is in danger of falling apart. Recently Atlantic Lottery Corp., which represents Newfoundland-Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia pulled out of the project for a multitude of reason. That leaves only B.C. and Quebec working together. On Saturday the Montreal Gazette took a look at the potential operations and it’s seemingly obvious target, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission.

Until the network launches, or finds other partners to work with, Canadians will have to suffice with Celine Dion.

Coming to a TV Near You: A 24/7 Gaming Network

A couple of Las Vegas gaming experts are working together to launch an around-the-clock network aimed at gaming enthusiasts and industry insiders alike. UNLV professor Jeff Voyles and his partner Randy Zinkil have apparently raised $1,000,000 to help launch the network.

In an interview with the Las Vegas Sun, Voyles promises that the network will cover the sexy side of the Las Vegas gaming scene and the business angles as well.

“It wouldn’t be my goal to ruffle the feathers of the industry,’ he said. “My job would be to give people a platform and ask the right questions to tell people what’s going on. I’m not here to take one side or the other.”

Voyles got the idea while flipping through trade magazines a few years ago.

“It just didn’t make sense, going through all this stuff,” he said. “If I took all this content and put it in a 24-hour news format, I could coordinate a less fragmented delivery of this information.”
