Amateur Wins World Series of Golf in Playoff; Lindgren Runner-Up

The second annual World Series of Golf tournament followed a trend made popular by the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker main event - it was won by an amateur. Andrew “AJ” Johnson, a 36-year-old car salesman, came out on top of the 80 player event in Las Vegas to win the $250,000 first place prize.

The format for the WSOG combines the skill of golf and the wagering format of texas hold’em. Players ante up on each tee, then can bet, raise, call, check or fold on each subsequent shot. The object of the game is not to shoot the lowest golf score, but rather to claim the pot on each hole, eventually eliminating opponents by winning all of their chips.

The unique format tournament attracted professional poker players Erick Lindgren, Phil Gordon, Phil Ivey, Tom SchneiderDaniel NegreanuAllen Cunningham and Chris Ferguson as well as a few celebrities including Ray Romano.

Lindgren finished as the runner-up and collected $60,000 for his efforts. Johnson won the event after placing his tee shot only a few yards short of the pin on the very first playoff hole at Paiute Golf Resort. The final round had Johnson and Lindgren grouped with Cunningham, Dee Tiller and Bill Spencer.
The event will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports, June 28 and 28.
