American Carter Phillips Leads EPT Barcelona Final Table
- Lance Bradley | September 9, 2009
Carter Phillips is only 20 years old but sometime Wednesday afternoon he’ ll have a chance to capture a major title. The North Carolina resident is the chip leader of the European Poker Tour stop in Barcelona with the final table set to kick off at 2pm local time.
Phillips has 4,421,000 chips and finds himself more than a full million ahead of Marc Goodwin. Having qualified on PokerStars.com for $800 Phillips is in line for a massive lifetime ROI boost should he take down the €850,000 ($1,232,250 US) first place prize.
Goodwin took a major hit towards the end of the night shipping nearly one million in chips to Phillips on a bluff but on the final elimination of the night Goodwin got a good chunk back. Goodwin raised to 120,000, Julien Nuijten responded by moving all-in for his last 750,000 and Goodwin called. Nuijten showed A
Q
and was dominated by the A
K
of Goodwin. The flop came A
Q
6
giving Nuijten top-two but the 7
turn and 5
river filled the flush for Goodwin and sent Nuijten to the rail in 9th place.
The only other players who pose an immediate threat to Phillips’ stack are Matt Lapossie, with 2,938,000, and Asa Smith, with 1,380,000. The other four players are all under one million in chips.
Like most EPT final tables the UN is represented very well with a Romanian, a Greek, a Finn, a Spaniard, a Canadian, two Brits and the lone American, Phillips.
