Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier Wins World Poker Tour Festa al Lago
- Lance Bradley | October 27, 2008
The race for BLUFF Magazine’s Player-of the-Year just got a whole lot more interesting thanks to the latest World Poker Tour stop.
Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier, who was in 12th place in POY standings heading into the Festa al Lago championship event, eliminated all five players at the final table to take home the WPT title and the $1,411,015. He also earned 375 POY points which will move him into second place, only 163.31 points behind current leader John Phan.
The last player that Grospellier eliminated was Nam Le who earned $943,215 for his runner-up finish. When heads-up play began Grospellier had nearly a 16:1 chip lead. Despite Le doubling up twice on the first two hands of heads-up action Grospellier captured his final elimination on the third hand between himself and Le.
Coming in third was Odie Dardon. The 35-year-old businessman added $506,245 to his bankroll.
Maybe the most disappointed player at the final table was Nenad Medic who finished fourth. Despite earning $373,010 Medic was hoping to join Phan as players with a WPT title and World Series of Poker bracelet in 2008.
One of the top online players, Adam “Roothlus” Levy finished in fifth place and banked $266,445. The first player to feel the wrath of Grospellier on Sunday was William Mietz whose sixth place finish was worth $186,510.
The next stop on the WPT will be the Foxwoods World Poker Finals beginning November 5.
