Bodog Gets Domain Names Back After 21 Month Battle
- Lance Bradley | April 22, 2009
Apparently Alwyn Morris is a better smooth talker than Calvin Ayre.
Morris, Chief Executive for the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group the exclusive licensee of the “Bodog” brand for online gaming services in the United States, was able to negotiate a settlement in the patent infringement case with 1st Technology that had tied up the domain name Bodog.com since August 1, 2007. On that date a default judgement was awarded to 1st Technology in the amount of $45 million that subsequently resulted in the seizure of a number of Bodog-owned domain names.
The aftermath saw Bodog operations first switch to newbodog.com before finding a more permanent home at BodogLife.com. Players only saw a brief interruption in services as the company transitioned to a new domain name. The company however announced Tuesday that they had reached a settlement to secure the domain names back.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be able to return the Bodog experience to its rightful home – the reaction of staff and key suppliers has been thunderous,” said Morris. “We will be transitioning the MMGG site to this domain over the coming weeks. Moreover, we have only just this morning inked a deal with Bodog Antigua, from whom we license the Bodog brand. Under this contract, outside of our brand license territory, the www.bodog.com domain will be redirected to the other brand licensees’ sites, as appropriate.”
Ayre made no secret of his dislike for 1st Technology and its founder Scott Lewis. In any interviews about this case and blog postings on the matter Ayre referred to Lewis as a “patent troll” and seemed unwilling to engage in any discussions with Lewis on reacquiring the domain names.

hmmm or perhaps it’s the fact that the Mohawks are a known militant organisation that have already caused massive grief to the Canadian and Ontario governments and have more…..personal leverage options available to them. Think kneecapping.
Think ‘Casino’, think ‘Goodfellas’ and you’d be closer to the mark.
