There’s little question these days that the Borgata in Atlantic City is the East Coast’s premier destination for poker, but its reputation will only get stronger when it plays host to another $500,000 guaranteed prize pool event this May.

The $1,650 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament will be held in the spacious 85-table Borgata poker room from May 17-20. Despite what qualifies as a modest buy-in in large-scale live tournament terms, the tournament will sport starting stacks of 30,000 chips and a structure with long levels that will only increase (50 minutes on Day 1, 60 minutes on Day 2, 75 minutes on Day 3) as the field is narrowed.

Chances are good that the guarantee will fall short of the final prize pool figures. The previous three deep-stack events at Borgata have drawn 919, 956, and 775 players each, and all three had a prize pool at least 175% larger than the original guarantee. Naturally, that means that the top prizes have been pretty hefty: Mike Leah won $319,536 this March, Anthony Bellino grabbed $443,201 in August 2008, and Schuyler Twaddle took $395,095 last May.

While two starting days - Sunday, May 17, and Monday, May 18 - are available, anyone who really wants to play would be well-advised not to show up at start time on the 18th looking to get into the event. The last tournament, held in March, saw 635 players show up on Day 1B, stretching registration lines out of the poker room for hours at the start of the day. The tournament staff was able to get all players in, but at the time they recommended that anyone who wanted to play in the future take advantage of pre-registration on the casino’s website in order to avoid missing out on the action.
