Canadian Wins Borgata $500,000 Guaranteed Deep Stack
- Jason Kirk | March 25, 2009
When the Borgata throws a guaranteed prize pool tournament, there’s another guarantee: the turnout will be enormous. That was the case once again this past weekend, as the Atlantic City poker mecca drew 919 players for its $1,500 buy-in Deep Stack tournament. Only 284 played Day 1A, but the field ballooned with another 635 entrants on Day 1B.
The event originally had a $500,000 guaranteed prize pool but in the end the sheer volume of players brought that number to a whopping $1,378,500. The tournament’s structure and starting stack were another example of why Borgata has become the east coast’s premier poker destination: every player began with 600 big blinds (30,000 at 25-50 blinds) and levels were 50 minutes long.
The last man standing after four days of poker was Mike Leah of Innisfil, Ontario, Canada. Leah ended Day 1A as the chip leader and never looked back. His win was good for$319,536, his second big score of the year (he took second place for $152,600 in an LA Poker Classic preliminary event). He sealed the win by defeating his Borgata roommate, Allen Bari of West Orange, N.J., with J-J to Bari’s K-7.
Among those who joined Leah in the money were Will “The Thrill” Failla (16th), FTOPS Main Event winner Va Shon “Julian Verse” Watkins (74th), and Allen “The Chainsaw” Kessler (89th).
Here’s a rundown of the final table payouts.
- Mike Leah - $319,536
- Allen Bari - $196,436
- William Stradley - $106,833
- Boris Belanchuk - $93,048
- Joseph Curcio - $79,263
- Richard Hall - $65,478
- Michael Silverman - $51,693
- Ian Palomo - $37,909
- Michael Kalfa - $27,570
