EXCLUSIVE Daniel “Jungleman12″ Cates Speaks About His Role in Girah Scandal
- Lance Bradley | August 10, 2011
Daniel “Jungleman12″ Cates had one of the most meteoric rises in poker history. From out of nowhere, a then teen-aged online poker player went from micro-stakes to nosebleeds in the span of a few months. His climb to the top of the high stakes world was impressive, but not long after him came another young phenom, Jose Macedo, who climbed the ranks in short order.
Known, at first, as the Portuguese Poker Prodigy, Macedo went from low stakes to high stakes, all before his 18th birthday. His arrival was celebrated in a now famous thread on TwoPlusTwo. The poker world later learned that Macedo had actually been receiving coaching from Cates for nearly a year.
Following Black Friday, Cates, along with Haseeb Qureshi, the player who introduced Macedo to Cates, planned to move to Portugal to live with the prodigy and continue their online poker careers. Over the last week, however, the poker world has been shocked to learn that Macedo was scamming a number of high stakes regulars, causing a number of people to question Cates’ involvement, Qureshi’s role, the relationship between the three players and whether or not “Jose Macedo” even exists.
BluffMagazine.com talked with Cates to get his side of this story and ask him about his relationship with both Macedo and Qureshi.
BLUFF: At what point did you first hear about Jose possibly being involved in scamming people ?
CATES: I think about a week ago “kjemmy” messaged me on Facebook and said he thought Jose may be involved in a scam. He gave me a long list of details. I asked Haseeb about it, although, to be honest, I did not think it was possible that Jose was scamming.
Based on what exactly?
I had just thought he was a straight up guy. A couple of people told me he was very trustworthy.
What was your reaction once you realized that Jose was, in fact, scamming people?
My reaction was a mix of ‘How does this make sense?’ and ‘What was he thinking?’. I feel like there is some gap in my understanding of Jose. (I) wasn’t sure what to think of him after I learned of it.
For people who aren’t familiar with the high stakes poker world, how common is it to back or coach somebody you’ve never met in person? Do any safety protocols exist for situations like this?
Pretty common for online poker, backing, etc. mostly has to do with reputation, results, mutual friends and perhaps some other things. Safety protocols do not really exist. I believe they don’t really exist because of the implied threat of something like this happening to the reputation of the stakee.
So how does this impact your relationship with Haseeb?
Honestly, I truly believe Haseeb had good intentions. He has helped Jose a lot and it’s really frustrating for him to watch Jose just throw everything away like this. He has been a good friend and helped me with my career as well. I don’t think Haseeb deserves all the shit he is getting.
Also, I am 100% certain there was no sort of scheme to scam people or whatever.
You mean, from Haseeb?
From Haseeb and myself. Jose’s scam was his own doing.
So then do you think your association with him, in terms of this incident, is overblown?
Maybe. I havent thought about it that much. He is my friend though.
Many have speculated that Jose is just a face/name attached to the account and maybe Haseeb or others were playing on the account. We know of at least one instance where this Haseeb played on Jose’s account. How can you be 100% certain that Jose is the one playing all of the hands on that account?
I am very certain that all hands played on Jose’s account are from him (unless Jose has allowed others to play on his account) except for the one instance in where Haseeb admitted to playing on his account. Almost certainly, over 95% of the hands are Jose’s.
When Jose was disqualified from the BLUFF Poker Challenge on Lock Poker, did you know it was Haseeb who had played on the account?
Yes, but I did not want to get involved. I know it was not a habit.
You and Haseeb had plans to meet up and live with Jose in Portugal. Do you still want to meet him or just wash your hands of him entirely?
If I want to meet him now, it’s for an explanation and for my money back. I know for a fact that I took action versus one of the two names of his friend (sauron1989, dollarman) so it seems likely that he has scammed me as well.
So what does this do to your reputation and how do you go about it changing that or repairing the damage?
Well, once again, it was Jose that did wrong, not me. Perhaps not trust people I do not know more thoroughly in the future?
You have to admit, that your image has taken a bit of a hit here simply because of your connection to him, no?
Sure, as to how much, I don’t know specifically. I hope not too much.
Is there any part of you that is at all suspect of Haseeb and Jose’s relationship?
No. Haseeb knew that 2+2 would blowup once he heard about the scam, he wanted to minimize damage. Turns out that completely backfired.
BLUFF will have an exclusive interview with Qureshi on BluffMagazine.com later Wednesday evening. Be sure to check back then or follow us on Twitter @BluffMagazine to get the latest news.

Nothing to see here, move along. Seriously though, this interview will do nothing to alleviate the outrage that this incident has produced. Not sure why Dan couldn’t have just elaborated more in the forums. I hope for his sake that new information doesn’t come to light.
He didn’t say anything in the forums because his idiot agent/manager told him not to. This same agent was found to be involved in posting pyramid schemes all over the internet. Really good person to take career advice from Dan
Bluff magazine wouldn’t have paid him to elaborate in the forums….same with Haseeb. I think Dan likely didn’t do much of anything wrong other than have some knowledge that Haseeb was MA’ing….Haseeb on the other hand might as well get paid as he’s going down…sell it to Bluff….
Kind of weird you didn’t ask Jungleman about the SamChahuan account.
Jose beat a guy with the same name as jungle’s life coach(Sam Chahuan) when Jose was cheating during the Lock Poker challenge.
[ ] I believe you Jungleman
As the previous poster mentioned, Daniel should pray that more information does not come out. He’s definitely involved much more than what has been revealed so far.
Who knows, maybe he was cheating durrr also in the durrr challenge along with other HS players.
This is a terrible interview, conducted as if the interviewer has not remotely bothered to research what has been happening. Softball questions with no follow-up. Nothing about SamChahuan and the obvious chip dumping. Nothing about whether or not Daniel actually examined Girah hand histories, or substantively railed him. Nothing about Haseeb’s relentless hype campaign.
This is either awful interviewing, or paid PR.
yeah what´s with the samcauhan account?and what´s up with the several lies Haseeb has been proven to have told?(sry for english lol)
and what´s up with you taking advice from this ultrashady agent been involved in such lolfuckingsnowblalfuck lol wtf jungleman for real you don´t seem to be that dumb please!!so many unanswered questions still there it´s so sick and you don´t answer it in the forums?WHY WTF it looks so bad:(
For the record Daniel was not paid for the interview and his manager was never involved in any Pyramid schemes.
We will have another story up soon. Check back soon.
Why should Daniel have been paid? He should have paid you–lots–for serving as his PR outlet. This is some bloody awful interviewing. Jeez Bluff–this makes you look really bad.
I wonder how much money got this Lance guy for the interiview. Its nothing, its a piece of ….
Its clearly just the surface of the whole story. There are so many unanswered question yet you ask what has been answerd or just obvious.
What about Girah/DiH/JM posted from the same IP from vegas?
How many post were written/fabricated by DiH?
What about the chip dumping?
If girah was so fcking successfull why the fck you guys staked him to play mid stackes game?
etc. etc. etc.
If you jungleman read this you better start answering on 2p2 cause your rep is on stake
Also please guys stop calling him homosexual, it’s not an illness x
Hey Guiiise!
I have heard of a coach that is looking for work due his former employer filing bankruptcy. He is said to crush nl200000 at a rate of 60bb/100 over a 3.5mm sample.
Wait and see!
Jose, I am interested in a cam show, perhaps I could be your cam slave in return for letting me sweat you mmmm

The “X” is comming. This summer. Or later. Or never if I find Sauce before he …
for the record (i know no one gives a sh*t about it) i was a big fan of you JM. and im quite sad for this but i have to say this answers and the fact this are your only answers makes you look really shady. what a pity
For the record, the questions asked are equally as bad, if not worse, than the answers given. This interview was borderline retarded/worthless….
tl;dr
nah seriously what a joke, will never read Bluff again. Oh wait I never read Bluff.
I clicked on your magazine link for the first time today, after reading those completely worthless questions, i wont be clicking on your magazine again
Get some new friends Jungleman, and stop associating with these scumbags Haseem and Macedo
First and last time I read an article on this site. What a useless, POS, soft-played interview.
Great interview! Now the poker community knows Cates is clear. Can’t wait to read Bluff-mag put the heat on Haseeb too…bucket pls:(
I think Cates has more to explain. If i find out more, im gonna post it on my blog since i feel theres more to it then it seems. Feel free to read it later or when u have time. Interview was too short. Jungleman may not be scamming players but he sure ismt revealing his true feelings since he got scammed. The two closest ppl to macedo only said this much? Theyre smarter than they look.
Why Jm is so quiet about this?? Feels like all Jm want is for this to blow over. This interview realy makes me even moore to doubght JMs an HQs involvement. I hope there will be a serious inquiry about what has realy happened. So many questionmarkes left to be explained!!!
What a fkn LIAR, he knew it all and prob. he s the mind behind all this. Dont tell me some of the best thinkers in poker didnt know about all this all along.. come on.
Im sure it will come out open..
Lets see some handhistory from your matches against Sauron/Dollarman if it was your own action DM.
This guy seems genuly creepy.
JM got no soul!
Did Jungle pay Bluff for this “interview”?
Why is it now, he sais he says he was cheated, but in the beginning he wasnt????
GUILTY!
All fluff, no stuff. Fail of an interview. First and last time to this site.
Give me a fucking break. This article was the softest play I have seen since Chineese DONs.
Worst interview ever…..
No info, no real questions. My god what a load of crap…
BoooooooooHHHHHHHHHHH
I have great respect for great players. I want to become one aswell.
I thought Jose was a great player.
I think Jose Macedo must go to jail.
This is so bad for poker.
He cheated all pro-players very bad.
And before this he cheated everybody to play online when he was underage.
I hope one of the victims will try to make him go to jail.
José “Girah” Macedo – Haseeb “DogIsHead” Qureshi – Daniel “Jungleman” Cates = confirmed liar cheater scam scammer scum thief virus trojan google don’t hire
Why is jungleman a scammer? what did he do that we know of? Maybe he got taken advantage of by a friend? Didnt a lot of people think deldar took advantage of him a couple months ago? I think maybe haseeb roped him in here and maybe Jose too. Needs to pick better friends. He is a great mpoker mind but peopl smarter then him might be taking advantage of his kindness or lack of social skills
JM: Also, I am 100% certain there was no sort of scheme to scam people or whatever.
Q: You mean, from Haseeb?
JM: From Haseeb and myself. Jose’s scam was his own doing.
LOOOOOL HOW CAN HE BE 100% SURE ABOUT HQ??????? specially after all the accusations on 2p2?? we cant trust someone who states somethin like this
“I am very certain that all hands played on Jose’s account are from him (unless Jose has allowed others to play on his account) except for the one instance in where Haseeb admitted to playing on his account. Almost certainly, over 95% of the hands are Jose’s.
When Jose was disqualified from the BLUFF Poker Challenge on Lock Poker, did you know it was Haseeb who had played on the account?
Yes, but I did not want to get involved. I know it was not a habit.”
Cates has since admitted that _he_ played on the account during the Lock Poker challenge!
