Big Names Get Set for Borgata Main Event

Tales and legends about players and teams that were “destined” to win abound in many sports, and poker is no exception as Thursday saw the conclusion of what may become one of the most storied runs in Borgata Winter Poker Open (WPO) history.

Featuring the strongest field of the Borgata Winter Poker Open to date, Wednesday’s
Main Event #10 brought a number of the game’s elite players to the Event Center floor and generated a prize pool of $822,500. With players in attendance like World Series of Poker 2006 Main Event Champion Jamie Gold, Layne “Back-to-back” Flack, last year’s September Poker Open champion Roy “The Oracle” Winston, and three-time Poker Open winner Bill Blanda, there was no shortage of excitement on the tournament floor throughout the day.

Despite starting with a field of 329 players, only 22 would survive the day’s action and return Thursday for the tournament’s second day of play. After several hours of play on Thursday, the field was narrowed to the final table, producing what may be the toughest final table of this year’s WPO. Four top-flight pros took to the felt, with local Matt Glanz, Steve “The Wrecking Ball” Fiorentini, Erich “E-Fro” Froelich, and Thayer “THAY3R” Rasmussen, hoping to win the $238,525 first-place prize.

In the end, Fiorentini lived up to his nickname by demolishing everyone in his path to take the title. Going all-in seven times in a row at one point, Fiorentini hit two hands in which he was considered an underdog, but nailed a three-outer and six-outer to climb to the top of the chip counts. “The Wrecking Ball” wreaked havoc on his opponents throughout the final table action and eventually scored the victory.

Fiorentini showed plenty of emotion throughout the two days and looked a little stunned when the traditional winner’s picture was taken. “This is the greatest moment of my poker life. I felt like I was floating on air when I realized I was going to win,” he said after the victory.
When asked about his uncanny knack for hitting ridiculously low percentage hands and winning the majority of his all-in plays, he responded, “I had to turn it into an all-in fest because I thought the rest of the table would outplay me.”

Although the $2,500 Main Event is now in the record books, plenty of exciting action remains in this year’s WPO, starting with Friday’s $5,000 Main Event #12. Many poker pros have arrived to play in the $5,000 buy-in and the $10,000 World Poker Tour Main Event, so the action should prove interesting for fans.

Borgata sets another record at the Winter Poker Open

Wednesday might be considered “hump day” for some people, and in most instances, it seldom finds favor the way a Thursday or a Friday might, but for the players descending on the Borgata Winter Poker Open (WPO) for its $2,500 Event #10, the day symbolized the start of a fun-filled weekend of high-stakes tournament poker.

Three-hundred twenty-nine players began playing for the $238,525 first-place prize as Borgata set another attendance record. Beating last year’s turnout by 89 players, the field generated the largest prize pool of the Borgata Winter Open to date with 36 players getting a piece of the $822,500.

With the increase of the Main Event buy-in, a dramatic shift occurred in the number of professional players in the Event Center. Over 39 top-flight players came to test their skills and they created some tough match-ups early in the tournament. The most intriguing table was No. 4. Featuring pros Tracy Scalla, “Gentleman” John Gale, three-time Poker Open champion Bill Blanda, Paul McCaffrey, Jonathan Little, and Darrell “Gigabet” Dicken, the table provided plenty of action for fans on the rail.

Other notables seeing action on the day came from all different kinds of poker-playing backgrounds. The local pro contingency was led by three different Matts, Matt “Allinat420″ Stout, Matt Brady, and Matt Glanz. The online community had a strong showing as well with online giants Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy, Eric “Sheets” Haber, and Jared “The Waco Kidd,” seeing action.

The largest number of pros came from the professional poker tournament circuit. With big names players such as World Series of Poker Main Event winner Jamie Gold, Young Phan, Hevad “Rainkhan” Khan, Eugene Todd, Vanessa Rousso, Amnon Fillipi, Layne Flack, and Steve Dannenman all seeing action, the $2,500 featured plenty of intense play.

According to Borgata’s September 2007 Poker Open Main Event winner Roy “The Oracle” Winston, the Borgata is the place to be. “I am excited to be back at Borgata. Tab Duchateu and his staff run the best tournaments in the country. I hope I can make a strong showing again this year. Regardless of the outcome, I’m just happy to be a part of such a great tournament series.”

There is plenty of action still to come at the WPO, as a number of smaller buy-in Main Events will play out, with Friday bringing the $5,000 buy-in Main Event #12 and Sunday marking the start of the $10,000 World Poker Tour championship.

Brett Faustman Beats Tough WPT Final Table

WIth names like Freddy Deeb, Men “The Master” Nguyen and Hoyt Corkins, few people were talking about Brett Faustman winning the World Poker Open in Tunica yesterday. Faustman managed to have the time of a lifetime four handed against some of the games greatest players. With play four-handed, it was like a classic gun fight. Each player took turns with the chip lead, before Freddy Deeb was eliminated by Faustman when Deeb’s 7d-8d could not catch up to Faustman’s Ah-Kh. The next to go was Nguyen who moved all in with Kd-10d and was quickly called by Hoyt Corkin’s Jacks. Going into heads-up play, Faustman held a sizeable chip lead that Corkin’s could just not crack. The final hand saw both players seeing a flop 9h-9c-3c, Faustman bet out at the pot, ad Corkin’s moved all in. Fasutman called and turned over two Quees and was ahead of Corkin’s pocket deuces. The board brought no help for cowboy, and Fasutman won his first WPT event.

Final Results:

1. Brett Faustman - $892,413
2. Hoyt Corkins - $458,267
3. Men Nguyen - $241,193
4. Freddy Deeb - $168,835
5. Gabe Costner - $123,008

Borgata Winter Poker Open Continues

Wednesday marked the debut of Borgata’s big buy-in No Limit tournaments as the action at the 2008 Borgata Winter Poker Open (WPO) continues at a breakneck pace. Poker’s top players are converging by the dozens on the East Coast’s most popular poker destination, ensuring strong fields that should provide plenty of excitement for the fans and players alike.

The anticipation levels of both the players and Borgata staff are at an all-time high, with expectations that the number of players participating in this year’s tournaments would match or surpass last year’s figures. According to a number of professionals, the Borgata Winter Poker Open has become a mandatory stop on the pro tour.

” If it wasn’t for the Borgata Poker Open, I never would have left Melbourne after the Aussie Millions. It’s beautiful down there, but I can’t pass up some of the best tournaments of the year in my own backyard,” said local pro Matt “Allinat420″ Stout, who came to Borgata immediately after his 24th-place finish in the Aussie Millions Championship Event.

Beginning with the $2,500 Event #10 and culminating with the $10,000 World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Classic Championship Event, the WPO continues to provide poker players with a range of buy-ins that tempt even the most frugal players. Featuring large prize pools and smaller fields, these tournaments cater to players who love the excitement of high-stakes poker. The bigger buy-in events are such a favorite of the players that many travel from around the globe to get in on the action.

” Players travel from all over the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia for our Poker Open events. Borgata is committed to poker players and the overall tournament experience, which I believe contributes to the popularity of our events,” said Borgata’s Director of Poker Marketing Ray Stefanelli.

While a good number of pros sat on the sidelines for today’s action, twenty players returned to the Event Center floor to play out day two of the $300 Modified Shootout Event #8. In the fastest finish of this year’s WPO, the winner was declared in a little over two hours of play as Jose Severino took the title and the first-place cash of $47,008. Van Tran finished second and collected $24,750.
