2008 Poker Hall of Fame: Dewey Tomko and Henry Orenstein

Dewey Tomko had three cashes at the 2008 World Series of Poker, but he’s probably going to remember it more for receiving poker’s most prestigious honor - a Hall of Fame induction.

Harrah’s Entertainment, which owns the Hall of Fame, announced Friday that Tomko, along with Henry Orenstein would comprise the 2008 class.

Tomko’s career includes three bracelets and two runner-up finishes in the WSOP Main Event in 1982 and 2001. He also finished second to Paul Phillips at the 2003 World Poker Tour Five Diamond World Poker Classic.

Orenstein’s poker tournament results only showfour cashes, including a bracelet win at the 1996 WSOP, but he’s not going in for what he did on the felt, rather it’s what he did under the felt. Orenstein holds over 100 patents on many different items and is credited as the inventor of the hole-card cam. The camera, which allows television audiences to see the hole cards of players in real time was one of the driving factors behind the popularity of poker on television.

The pair will be inducted during a ceremony on Sunday, November 9 at the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas during the final table of the 2008 Main Event. ESPN will also show portions of the ceremony during the final table broadcast.

Tomko and Orenstein are the 36th and 37 HOF inductees. They join Phil Hellmuth and Barbara Enright who were inducted last year.

Bluff Poker Tour Kicks Off with Warm-Up Event Sunday

It’s time to get warmed up for the Bluff Poker Tour. The BPT, which begins next week, will be hosting the Warm-Up Special this Sunday at PokerHost.com. While this tourney won’t count toward the point standings, there will be extra bounties available to win!

Poker Hall of Famer’s TJ Cloutier and Barbara Enright, Amir Vahedi, Marsha Waggoner, James “KrazyKanuck” Worth, Jennifer “Jennicide” Leigh, Warren Karp, Bluff Publisher Eric Morris, and 1983 WSOP champion Tom McEvoy are all scheduled to play in this kickoff event.

The BPT was originally launched in 2005 and ran though 2006 with overwhelming success. www.picclub.com has made it possible to bring back the successful virtual tour. In order for any player to be eligible they must create an account with www.picclub.com. Once an account has been created players can then deposit and use their funds to transfer money to participating poker rooms.

The BPT is a virtual tour which takes place at many online poker venues who utilize www.picclub.com processing. Each tour stop will be a $10 +$1 buy-in with points being awarded for both finishing position and participation. Tour stops will take place every Thursday evening at 9:15 PM EST. We will also include one Sunday tournament each month as a special bonus event. The Sunday tournament will take place at 8:30PM EST.

There will be at least 4 pros playing in each stop along the way. The list of pros include TJ Cloutier, Amir Vahedi, Kathy Liebert, Jennifer “Jennicide” Leigh, and former WSOP champion, Tom McEvoy among others. Bounties will be placed on all pros. “KO” a pro and earn automatic entry into the TOC at the end of the tour.

The BPT will run from Nov 2, 2008 to May 7, 2009, with the Tournament of Champions being held on May 10th, followed by the heads up battle on May 14, 2009. The overall point’s leader will be exempt from the TOC and automatically receive a seat to the heads up battle to face the winner of the TOC. The heads up battle will be a best of 3 tournament format with the winner being declared the BPT champion. The winner of the heads up battle will receive the grand prize, which is a seat into the Sports Legends Challenge (valued at over $10,000).

Mauro Corsetti Leading EPT Budapest; Annette Obrestad in the Hunt

After both starting days at the European Poker Tour’s Budapest stop are in the books Mauro Corsetti of Italy is one of only two players to break the 100,000 chip mark. But unfortunately for Corsetti, who has 136,200 chips, it’s the player in second that has everybody talking.

The top Hungarian player is Zoltan Toth who sits in 13th place with 59,600. Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier Wins World Poker Tour Festa al Lago

The race for BLUFF Magazine’s Player-of the-Year just got a whole lot more interesting thanks to the latest World Poker Tour stop.

Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier, who was in 12th place in POY standings heading into the Festa al Lago championship event, eliminated all five players at the final table to take home the WPT title and the $1,411,015. He also earned 375 POY points which will move him into second place, only 163.31 points behind current leader John Phan.

The last player that Grospellier eliminated was Nam Le who earned $943,215 for his runner-up finish. When heads-up play began Grospellier had nearly a 16:1 chip lead. Despite Le doubling up twice on the first two hands of heads-up action Grospellier captured his final elimination on the third hand between himself and Le.

Coming in third was Odie Dardon. The 35-year-old businessman added $506,245 to his bankroll.

Maybe the most disappointed player at the final table was Nenad Medic who finished fourth. Despite earning $373,010 Medic was hoping to join Phan as players with a WPT title and World Series of Poker bracelet in 2008.

One of the top online players, Adam “Roothlus” Levy finished in fifth place and banked $266,445. The first player to feel the wrath of Grospellier on Sunday was William Mietz whose sixth place finish was worth $186,510.

The next stop on the WPT will be the Foxwoods World Poker Finals beginning November 5.

Twelve Players Left at Festa al Lago; Bertrand Grospellier Leads

Bertrand Grospellier started off 2008 with a win at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and with only 12 players left in the World Poker Tour Festa al Lago he’s in position to grab his second title of the year.

Grospellier has 2,039,000 to lead Osmin Dardon by only 80,000. Should Grospellier come through with a victory it would have a major impact on the BLUFF Magazine Player-of-the-Year rankings. A win would earn the Frenchman 375 POY points and vault him from 12th to 2nd behind current leader John Phan. With a little more than two months remaining Grospellier would be only 164 POY points behind Phan.

The final 12 players who will return to the Bellagio Fontana Lounge at Noon PT include some players who made a name for themselves at the 2008 World Series of Poker.

Michael DeMichele, who finished as the runner-up to Scotty Nguyen at the controversial $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, sits in fourth with 1,717,000. Nenad Medic, who won his first bracelet in the opening days of the Series, sits in seventh place with 1,435,000. Andrew “good2cu” Robl, who finished third behind Justin Bonomo and Erick Lindgren in the $5,000 Mixed Hold’em event, has 1,087,000 chips, good enough for ninth.

Joe Sebok, who despite six finishes in the top 35 in WPT events has never made a final table, sits in sixth place with 1,470,000. Twice in his career Sebok has been the TV table bubble boy.

For the third day in a row the chipleader from the previous day failed to survive. Ryan Fair busted out in 13th place just before play ended for the night. The 12 players will play down to the final six that will appear on the televised final table, which will tape on Sunday afternoon.

Ryan Fair Takes Over Chip Lead at World Poker Tour Festa al Lago

Apparently the poker gods are in the mood to punish people.

After the Festa al Lago Day 1a and 1b fields combined on Wednesday Antonio Esfandiari had an impressive chip lead only to lose a monster pot to Daniel Negreanu and be sent to the rail a few hands later.

That hand propelled Negreanu to the chip lead at the end of the Wednesday’s play but he fell to the wayside on Thursday, unable to overcome this newfound chipleader curse.

So for the third day in a row the World Poker Tour event will have a new chipleader when the players return to the Fontana Lounge to unbag their chips. Ryan Fair sits atop the leaderboard with 1,331,000 just ahead of Will Mietz who finished with 1,217,000.

But right behind Fair and Mietz is a trident of players that are within striking distance of the lead and have the pedigree to make a final table run.

Sitting in third is 2008 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure champion Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier with 1,151,000. In fourth is perennial WPT bridesmaid Joe Sebok. With 1,100,000 Sebok is the last player to have crested the 1 million chip mark. Nenad Medic, who won his first World Series of Poker bracelet this past summer, has 925,000 and sits in fifth place.

The day started with 104 players and wrapped up late Thursday night with only 34 remaining. Some of the big names to join Negreanu on the outside looking in include Doyle Brunson, David Chiu, Matt Stout, Johnny ChanMike Matusow and Jennifer Tilly.

The average chip stack when play resumes on Friday at 12 pm PT will be 487,059. The field will be reduced to the final six players who will make the TV final table.

Top 10 Chip Counts

1. Ryan Fair - 1,331,000
2. Will Mietz - 1,217,000
3. Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier - 1,151,000
4. Joe Sebok - 1,100,000
5. Nenad Medic - 925,000
6. Osmin “Odie” Dardon - 703,000
7. Steve Fiorentini - 686,000
8. Brad Booth - 616,000
9. Joe Ebanks - 595,000
10. Nam Le - 557,000

Daniel Negreanu Races into Lead After Day 2 at WPT Festa al Lago

On a day when a horse named “Kid Poker” failed to win, place or show in his race, Daniel Negreanu decided to make up for the shortcomings of the thoroughbred named after him. Negreanu chipped up in a big way during Day 2 action at the World Poker Tour’s Festa al Lago and finished the day with 513,000, good enough for the lead.

His key hand came against overall chip leader Antonio Esfandiari. With all the money going in on the flop Negreanu held a set of jacks while Esfandiari was looking at a two-outer with pocket aces. When the turn and river failed to bring an ace “the Magician” was crippled. He went out a few hands later, again at the hands of Negreanu.

But Esfandiari wasn’t the only who came into the day with a massive stack that hit the rail. Daniel Schreiber and Brian Rast were dominant players on Day 1b and neither will be around to play on Day 3.

After Negreanu, the only other player to crest the 400,000 chip mark, Blake Cahail, finished with 467,500. But there’s a bevy of strong players right behind Cahail that all have their sights set on the $1,411,000 first place prize - the largest of the WPT season to date.

Justin Bonomo (383,300), Nenad Medic (345,600), JC Tran (337,900), Jennifer Tilly (330,800) and Joe Sebok (327,200) hold spots three through seven on the leaderboard. Only 104 of the 246 players who started the day have moved on to Day 3 action at the Bellagio which will begin at 3 pm ET on Thursday.

Top 10 Chip Counts

1. Daniel Negreanu - 513,100
2. Blake Cahail - 467,500
3. Justin Bonomo - 383,300
4. Nenad Medic - 345,600
5. JC Tran - 337,900
6. Jennifer Tilly - 330,800
7. Joe Sebok - 327,200
8. Jamie Rosen - 321,200
9. Clemenceau Calixto - 310,200
10. Matthew Stout - 298,900

Daniel Schreiber and Brian Rast Top Day 1b at WPT Festa al Lago

Monday at the Bellagio was all about Antonio Esfandiari and his dominating start to the World Poker Tour’s Festa al Lago. But as 215 players crammed their way into the Fontana Lounge Tuesday for Day 1b the story quickly became about the prize pool.

At $5,354,400 the 2008 prize pool is now the biggest in Festa al Lago history. With a buy-in bumped from $10,000 to $15,000 and a total field of 368 players this year the prize pool is also the largest of the Season VII WPT schedule. First place will pay $1,411,000, which is also the largest first place prize of Season VII.

Only two players managed to end the day with chip stacks larger than 200,000. Leading the way was Daniel Schreiber. The 2007 World Series of Poker Heads-Up champion bagged 206,925 at the end of the night while Brian “tsarrast” Rast managed to chip up to 206,225.

Those two players, along with the other 143 survivors from Day 1b, will join the 101 survivors from Day 1a at Noon PT on Wednesday for Day 2 action. But nobody from Day 1b was able to get anywhere near Esfandiari’s stack from Day 1a. “The Magician” finished with 313,000 and is the only player above 300,000.

Day 1b Top Ten Chip Counts

1. Daniel Schreiber - 206,925
2. Brian Rast - 206,225
3. Nenad Medic - 167,250
4. Ryan Young - 156,725
5. Toto Leonidas - 149,775
6. Doug Lee - 144,500
7. Matt Giannetti - 139,950
8. Kasey Nam - 132,075
9. Edward Margolin - 131,600
10. J.C. Alvarado - 129,700

Antonio Esfandiari In Front After Day 1a of WPT Festa al Lago

More than four years after his ground-breaking win at the World Poker Tour’s L.A. Poker Classic Antonio “the Magician” Esfandiari appears to be up to his old tricks.

Esfandiari chose Day 1a as his starting day for the $15,000 buy-in WPT Festa al Lago at the Bellagio and given his massive chip lead, it appears to have been the right call. With 313,000 chips Esfandiari is 103,200 ahead of his nearest competitor, Nick Sliwinski, who has 208,900.

Esfandiari’s lead can be partially attributed to a confrontation with the November Nine’s Scott Montgomery. Holding a set Esfandiari was all too happy to call Montgomery’s all-in check raise. At the time both players were hovering near the chip lead but the monster pot sent Esfandiari onto his strong finish.

One poker player that grabbed a lot of attention at the Bellagio on Monday was Olympian Michael Phelps. The 14-time gold medal winner was escorted around the Fontana Lounge by Phil Hellmuth leading to speculation that Phelps may enter the tournament and play on Day 1b. Phelps recently made the final table of a a $1,500 buy-in Caesars Palace Classic event.

The top five chip counts feature some more big names with big stacks. Right behind Esfandiari and Sliwinski is Jennifer Tilly with 195,050 and Andrew “good2cu” Robl is in fifth with 173,450. Also having a strong start to the tournament were Joe Sebok (142,050), Johnny Chan (138,000), Isaac “westmenloAA” Baron (116,825) and Allen Cunningham (105,825).

Day 1a brought out 153 players and when the day was done 52 had been sent to the rail. Some of the biggest names eliminated on Day 1a included Hellmuth, Alan GoehringCarlos Mortensen and Phil Laak. Day 1b will begin Tuesday at 3 pm ET.

Dennis Phillips Selling Sponsorship Opportunity on eBay

Dennis Phillips is about a few weeks away from sitting down at a poker table with a better than one in nine chance of winning $9 million. But the man who is the chip leader of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event is focused on helping others too.

Phillips is auctioning off the opportunity to put a 10 square inch logo on him during the ESPN-televised final table that will play out on November 9 - 10. The winning bid will have their company logo put on the right hand shoulder of Phillips and all of the proceeds will be donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

“Being on the Final Table of WSOP is an opportunity of a lifetime, but we hope that this opportunity will one day save someone’s life,” said Phillips.

The auction (here) will close on October 26 and current bidding is over $13,000 and the real winner, the charity, couldn’t be happier.

“We are thrilled to be a part of such an exciting promotion that will ultimately help us continue to move towards a world free of MS,” said Phyllis Robsham, president of the Gateway Area Chapter, “The awareness and funds raised through Dennis’ effort will help us to continue our work for the over 6,000 people living with MS in our area.”

Bluff Magazine Announces 2008-09 Bluff Poker Tour

  • | October 20, 2008

Bluff Magazine, in conjunction with Players Investment Company (PICClub.com), is proud to announce the schedule for the Bluff Poker Tour (BPT), a series of online poker tournament modeled after the World Poker Tour, for 2008-09.

The BPT is a series of online poker tournaments giving players the opportunity to not only win cash but also win their share of over $10,000 worth of great prizes from BPT sponsors along the way. Some of the online poker rooms on the schedule for 2008-09 include DoylesRoom.com, PitbullPoker.com, TruePoker.com and ReeferPoker.com.

“The Bluff Poker Tour is a great opportunity for us to share time at the felt with our readers,” said Eric Morris, publisher of Bluff Magazine. “Our previous incarnations of the BPT had a great response from our readership and we think the 2008-09 BPT will be the best yet.”

To be eligible to compete in the BPT players need to sign up for a PICClub.com account, which will allow them to deposit to or withdraw from any of the participating rooms. Bluff Magazine chose PICClub.com as a sponsor as it is quickly becoming the easiest way for players to deposit or withdraw from online poker rooms.

“PICClub.com is pleased to be a part of the BPT. As we’ve grown to become the best way for a player to deposit funds and the best way for a poker room to acquire new players the BPT was a natural fit,” said Chuck Kidd, CEO of PICClub.com. “We look forward to helping the tour be bigger and better than ever before. The PIC Pro Team is ready to go and they will be at every stop.”

Once the players create their account they will then be eligible to play in any of the BPT events between October 30, 2008 and May 7, 2009. Buy-in for each BPT event is $10 + $1 with points being awarded for both finishing position and participation.
