David Chiu Captures World Poker Tour World Championship

The World Poker Tour’s season-ending World Championship final table was supposed to be all about Gus Hansen. As play began at the six-handed TV final table Hansen had a substantial chip lead.

The Great Dane then went to work eliminating Jeff King, Tommy Le, Cory Carroll, and John Roveto in order to get heads up with David Chiu. By this point Hansen’s chip lead was better than 5 to 1. It should have been academic.

But Chiu seemed to refuse to bust and after doubling up only 10 hands into heads-up play Chiu would go on to win one pot after another until he took the chip lead from Hansen after nearly 60 hands of play.

Only two hands after giving up the chip lead Hansen found himself as the runner up. On the final hand Hansen raised to 750,000 from the button and Chiu called. The flop came Ac 10c 8s and Chiu checked, Hansen bet 900,000 and Chiu called. The 5s hit the turn and Chiu lead out for 1,200,000 and Hansen moved all-in for 8,675,000.

Chiu eventually called and showed As 9s for top pair with a nut flush draw. Hansen had flopped two pair with his 10s 8h. Hansen’s fate was sealed when the Ah hit the river giving Chiu trips, the WPT World Championship title and $3,389,140 for first place. Hansen’s runner-up finish paid $1,714,800
