EPT: Armed Robbery Halts Event in Berlin
- Paul Oresteen | March 6, 2010
Most of the details are still a little fuzzy, but a group of armed and masked men attempted to rob the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Berlin at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time. Play came to an abrupt hault as players, staff and media members fled the tournament area in a panic. The robbers were apparantly only after the money and no one is reported to be injured.
PokerStars has released the following statement:
“An armed robbery by six men took place today at EPT Berlin. Nobody was seriously injured. We hope to re-start all events at 4pm local time. A police investigation is underway. If you have video footage or photographs that could help the police, please contact the EPT organizers as soon as possible.”
Two events were underway - a 1,000 Euro NLHE and a Ladies Event, as well as, the main event. The 1,000 Euro event has been cancelled and players have been offered refunds. No decision yet has been reached for the restart of the Ladies event, but players have been offered a refund as well.
A clip of the scene can be scene here from the EPT live broadcast.
Police are investigating the incident and are asking that anyone with pictures or video of the event to contact the investigators.
An additional video of the scene has been posted on youtube and it captures elements of the robbery itself. Also on the tape is a struggle between security personnel and the masked robbers.
BLUFF contributor and noted European poker journalist Benjamin Gallen posted these comments:
“Guees we will remember that day, heh? Craziest day ever at the EPT with an armed robbery. Got scared shitless for a minute or so. We’re fine, now, sort of. Tournament and webcast is resuming soon.”
“It’s official : webcast isn’t continuing tonight. However, the tournament will play down to a final table.”
“Though I was only a witness of the panic from the TV studio where I was commenting live for pokerstars.tv . I was speechless. Those few minutes where we had no idea what was happening, just listenning to the screams, were some of the scariest moments of my life.”
As more details become available updates will be posted.
