EPT: Berlin Main Event Final Table Set Despite Robbery
- Paul Oresteen | March 6, 2010
Day 4 of the EPT Berlin Main Event is day that no one involved will ever forget. At about 2 p.m. six armed men pulled a robbery at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Berlin. Play was suspended for around four hours before play resumed after tournament officials and remaining players agreed to play down to the final table of eight. Twenty players remained in the tournament when the robbery occurred.
The investigation is ongoing and the amount stolen has not been disclosed. EPT officials released the following statement:
“An armed robbery by six men took place today at EPT Berlin. Nobody was seriously injured. We hope to re-start all events at 4pm local time. A police investigation is under way. If you have video footage or photographs that could help the police, please contact the EPT organizers as soon as possible.”

American Kevin MacPhee ends the day as chipleader with over 6,000,000 in chips after entering today as the chip leader.
At the moment when the robbery incident occurred a giant hand with Luca Cainelli and Ilari Tahkokallio was in the process being played. Cainelli was all-in holding A
Q
against Tahkokallio’s A
T
and the board had been dealt to the turn showing 3
K
8
4
. The dealer had not yet turned the river card when the tournament directors, players and dealer all left the table for safety.
Upon returning chips scattered and mixed all across the table and no one could be sure of everyone’s exact chip count. Tournament director Thomas Kremser was able to reassemble the chip stacks with players agreeing. Once the counts were settled there was the matter of the hand in mid play and Cainelli’s tournament life at stake.
Kremser’s initial ruling is that the hand was dead all players would have their chips returned. Cainelli was unhappy with the decsion and Kremser suggested that the deck could be shuffled and a river card dealt only if both players agreed. After a few moments Tahkokallio agreed the last card should be dealt. The river came the 5
and Cainelli doubled up.
An outer table had a dispute on chips when it was discovered approximately 300,000 chips were missing. Two players, Alfonso Amendola and Ketul Nathwani, each were around 500,000 short and there was only 700,000 stray chips in the middle. Kremser ruled that the missing amount of chips would be put in play and returned to the two players.
Final Table chip counts for EPT Berlin Main Event:
- Kevin MacPhee - 6,070,000
- Ketul Nathwani - 4,685,000
- Ilari Tahkokallio - 3,940,000
