EPT: O’Dwyer Tops Opening Day in Copenhagen
- Jessica Welman | February 20, 2012
There appears to be no slowing down Steve O’Dwyer. He had a massive 2011, winning a $5,000 Bellagio Cup event, winning the first Epic Poker Pro/Am event, and finishing runner-up in both the EPT London Main Event and the WPT Venice event. While other players who had red hot 2011′s saw their hot streaks cool down though, O’Dwyer just keeps on doing what he has been doing.
O’Dwyer finished Day 1A of the PokerStars.net European Poker Tour Copenhagen Main Event with the chip lead, topping the 83 players who signed up for the Day 1A action. After beginning the day with 30,000 chips, O’Dwyer built his stack up to 190,975 chips by day’s end.
A good chunk of those chips came O’Dwyer’s way late in the day when he and Giulio Mascolo clashed in a big pot worth more than 60,000. Mascolo moved all-in holding pocket jacks and O’Dwyer called with pocket kings. O’Dwyer’s hand held up and he finished with well nearly four times the average stack.
O’Dwyer is one of 48 players who survived Day 1A action. The relatively small Day 1A lost around half its runners to the rail over the course of several levels of action, including Dominik Nitsche, Rupert Elder, Sami Kelopuro, Soren Kongsgaard, and Paul Berende.
Lauri Varonen finished second in the Day 1A counts with 165,150 chips, while Roberto Romanello rounded out the top three with 115,475. Several recognizable faces will be returning for Day 2 action on Wednesday as well, including Melanie Weisner (78,900), Martins Adeniya (47,075), Allan Baekke (41,150), David Vamplew (31,825), and Team PokerStars Pros Arnaud Mattern (19,900) and Pierre Neuville (15,000).
Tournament officials are expecting roughly twice as many players at Casino Copenhagen for Day 1B on Tuesday. The buy-in for this event is DKK37,250, which amounts to roughly $6,614. With around 150 players expected for Day 1B, it seems highly unlikely that the stop will match last year’s field of 449 players.
Here are the top ten chip counts from Day 1A of the PokerStars.net EPT Copenhagen Main Event:
1. Steve O’Dwyer – 190,975
2. Lauri Varonen – 161,150
3. Roberto Romanello – 115,475
4. Ilkin Amirov – 105,000
5. Niels van Alphen – 96,325
6. Danny Neess – 95,875
7. Albert Iversen – 94,175
8. Dmitri Tchernykh – 90,525
9. Melanie Weisner – 78,900
10. Anthony Hnatow – 70,500
