EPT: Sorel Mizzi Builds a Stack in Yet Another Tournament

Season Seven of the European Poker Tour (EPT) is only two stops in, but it has set yet another attendance record. Earlier this month, the EPT Tallinn stop produced the largest live event in Estonia’s history. Sunday, the PokerStars EPT Villamoura Main Event officially became the largest Portugese poker tournament ever.

Day 1B of EPT Villmaoura drew 203 runners. Combine that with the 181 players from Day 1A and you have a total field of 384 players, a €1,862,400 prize pool and a top prize of €467,835 (approximately $595,600). All told, 56 players will make the money in Villamoura. By comparison, last year’s EPT event in Villamoura drew 322 runners.

Of the 203 players who took to the tables for Day 1B of PokerStars EPT Villamoura, 119 survived the day, while the remainder has the rest of the week to enjoy Portugal’s beaches. Those early Day 1B eliminations include Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, and Noah Boeken as well as Jim “MrBigQueso” Collopy, Davidi Kitai, Roberto Romanello, and Michael Binger.

While many big names hit the rail on Day 1B, many others thrived, including BLUFF Player of the Year frontrunner Sorel Mizzi, who was one of the first players to crack the 100,000 chip mark. Mizzi ended the day fifth in chips with 132,200. The player leading the Day 1B pack is Leonid Bilokur of Russia, who bagged and tagged 161,200 chips—enough to give him the overall chip lead headed into Day 2 of play on Monday. Other big stacks from the end of Day 1B include Samuel Trickett (132,600) and Brandon Cantu (122,400).

Here are the top ten chip counts from the end of Day 1B. The remaining 221 players will return to Casino Villamoura for Day 2 of play on Monday:

1. Leonid Bilokur – Russia – 161,200
2. Nic Heather – Ireland – 140,800
