Reinekmeier's win wraps up Season 6 of the EPT

Reinekmeier's win wraps up Season 6 of the EPT

The sixth season of the European Poker Tour (EPT) has officially drawn to a close now that the PokerStars.net High Roller Grand Final has concluded. While the future of the Grand Final is up in the air and it is unclear whether or not Monte Carlo will host the event in Season 7, we can say with utmost certainty that Tobias Reinkemeier is the last High Roller champ of an action-packed EPT Season 6.

The final table of the Monte Carlo event proved to be a stacked one and Reinkemeier came into the day in the middle of the pack while Dori Yacoub of Lebanon came in with the chip lead. The action got off with a bang as a short-stacked Michael Friedrich moved in with A4 and Allen Bari called with AQ. Both flopped flush draws on the 356 board and Friedrich made a straight with the 2 on the turn, but a T on the river gave Bari the nut flush to eliminated Friedrich in 8th place.

Bari would be the next to hit the rail when he ran his AK into Reinkemeier’s pocket kings. That pot knocked out Bari in 7th and pushed Reinkemeier into the chip lead He extended that lead by eliminating Sorel Mizzi next when his AQ held up against Mizzi’s A8.

Olivier Busquet started to give Reinkemeier a run for his money by doubling through Tom Marchese and subsequently eliminating Paul Berende in 5th place. Marchese was the next to fall, losing a coin flip holding 99 to Yacoub’s AK to go out in 4th place.

The top three finishers were unafraid to spar in big pots and Yacoub and Reinkemeier clashed in a huge pot that resulted in Yacoub making his exit in 3rd place. Preflop Yacoub raised out of the small blind, Reinkemeier called out of the big blind and the duo saw a flop of J62. Yacoub bet out after the flop and Reinkemeier called. The turn brought the K. Yacoub bet again, Reinkemeier called again. The river was the J and Yacoub moved all-in. Reinkemeier thought for a bit before calling with KT for kings and jacks, which had Yacoub’s 28 for jacks and deuces easily bested.

Heads-up play came down to Reinkemeier and Busquet and it was not the first time the two met mano a mano on the felt. Both have played their fair share of online heads-up games and Reinkemeier had the edge of knowing that Busqet played as livb112 and Adonis112 online. He used that knowledge to his advantage over the course of the back and forth battle.

The pivotal hand came when Reinkemeier called bets from Busquet on the flop and turn as the board ran out Q82A. The river brought the 2 and Busquet fired a third bullet. Reinkemeier announced he was all-in. Busquet told him, “I can’t call,” then released his hand. Reinkemeier then showed J9 for a total bluff.

That hand left Busquet short on chips and the two got it all-in the very next hand with Busquet holding A2 to Reinkemeier’s pocket queens. The queens held up on the T7237 board to give Reinkemeier the pot and the title.

Reinkemeier earns €956,000 for the win, which is roughly $1,270,000. It is his first major win on the EPT circuit, but not his first High Rollers score. He previously finished in 6th place at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure final table.
