First PokerStars LAPT Event Underway in Brazil

The newest land-based circuit backed by online poker room PokerStars is underway with its premiere event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The stop is the first of three that will comprise the first season of the PokerStars Latin American Poker Tour.

A total of 314 players entered the LAPT Rio including a strong group of pros from Team PokerStars. Andre Akkari from Brazil, Humberto Brenes from Costa Rica and Vanessa Rousso, Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, Victor Ramdin, Isabelle MercierChad Brown and Gavin Griffin are all representing the online poker room this week.

The $2,500 buy-in championship event will wrap up on Monday with the first place finisher earning $222,940.

“I am as passionate about the LAPT as Latin Americans are about life,” said LAPT President Glenn Cadematori. “Poker is exploding in Latin America and the game is more than ready for its own major poker tour. It’s one of the fastest-growing poker regions and in every regard, the LAPT is going to put Latin America on the map as the newest hot-spot to play high-stakes championship poker.”
The next stop is in San Jose, Costa Rica and will run for three days starting May 22nd. The final event of the season is the Punta del Este in Uruguay from August 7th - 9th.
