Gavin Griffin Wins Borgata Winter Poker Open
- Matthew Parvis | February 1, 2008
Gavin Griffin made poker history last night with his win in the 2008 Borgata Winter Poker Open. He becomes the first player to win an EPT title, a WSOP Bracelet and now a WPT title. Pretty impressive for one of the younger players on the circuit. It was no suprise the way the final table panned out yesterday. David Tran and Gavin Griffin came into the day with more than half of the chips in play, and thats the way it stayed.
Ervin Prifti was the first to be eliminated, and he was followed by WSOP Main Event Final tablist Lee Watkinson, who finished in fifth place. Noah Schwartz finished fourth, and Thomas Hare was eliminated in third place.
When heads-up play began Tran had Griffin out-chipped by about $2 million. The chip lead only lasted a few hands for Tran, as both players got all their chips in in a race situation. Tran held the lead with 9-9 while Griffin would need an Ace or a Queen, with his As-Qh. The flop was huge for Griffin, as it brought his Queen on a Q-8-8 board, the turn and river were of no help to Tran, and Griffin took a large chip lead. Griffin added to that lead when he rivered a straight with J-9, and had Tran on the ropes with only $800,000. Although Tran was able to double up once, it would prove to be fruitless as Griffin would eliminate Tran when they both got it all in, Gavin holding the Qs-Jc and Tran holding Ks-8s. Once again, the queen was a good card for Griffin as it lifted him to victory and the first ever Triple Crown of poker.
