With a second season now officially in the books, the richest prize in the history of the Latin American Poker Tour is in the hands of its youngest champion yet.

Online qualifier Dominik Nitsche, an 18-year-old high schooler from Minden, Germany, took less than four hours to dismantle a final table and claim the biggest share of a LAPT record $1.4 million prize pool up for grabs at LAPT Mar del Plata in Argentina. In the course of the final day of play Nitsche would overcome rivals from six countries, including two Team PokerStars players on home turf, taking home $381,030 for the win.

The $5,200 Main Event at Mar del Plata drew 291 players, including a full complement representing Team PokerStars Pro. Costa Rican poker godfather Humberto Brenes, former WSOP Main Event champs Chris Moneymaker and Joe Hachem, tennis legend Boris Becker, and Argentine PS pros Leo Fernandez and Jose Barbero were all on hand for the largest poker tournament in Latin American history.

Barbero would finish in ninth place for a modest $28,200 when his A-K couldn’t beat Sergio Farias‘ 5-5. Fernandez would eventually go out in sixth place ($63,520) in a hand that saw three players go all-in; Fernandez’s K-K and Farias’ T-T ran into Nitsche’s pocket aces and the bullets held up to send both players to the rail.

Heads-up play between Nitsche and Jorge Landazuri of Mexico - both online freeroll qualifiers - would last only a single hand. Landazuri picked the wrong time to bluff all-in against Nitsche’s three kings, and when he missed his outs for a straight to split the pot the LAPT had its youngest champion ever. Afterward, Nitsche said he planned to delay continuing his studies for a few years to concentrate on poker full time.

“We are extremely proud of the quality of all of our LAPT events,” LAPT President Glenn Cademartori said at the tournament’s conclusion. “The Mar del Plata grand final shattered the previous prize pool record. It’s a fantastic way to finish an incredible season.”
