Back in July when the World Series of Poker announced the ten names to be considered for Hall of Fame induction there was a collective gasp from some of the poker world. Online poker sensation Tom “durrrr” Dwan, all of 22 years old, had been chosen by fans alongside the likes of Mike Sexton, Erik Seidel, Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu.

Thankfully for some the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council had a say however in which of the 10 nominated players would go on for final consideration from a 15-member media panel and current members of the Hall of Fame. When the final nominations were revealed on Tuesday Dwan’s name wasn’t there.

“With all due respect to Mr. Dwan, one of the games most exciting young players, he does not currently meet the criteria for Hall of Fame selection,” the Council said in a release. ”We wish him well and expect he will again be considered once he has ‘stood the test of time.’”

To be considered for nomination the players had to meet the following criteria: 

• A player must have played poker against acknowledged top competition
• Played for high stakes
• Played consistently well, gaining the respect of peers
• Stood the test of time
• Or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results.

Given Dwan’s relatively short career the Council felt it made sense to exclude him at this point. The final nine players being considered are Sexton, Ivey, Negreanu, Seidel, Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, Dan Harrington and Tom McEvoy.

A panel of 15 media members and the current PHOF members will vote on which players should in inducted this year. Nominees need to receive 75% of all votes to be inducted. Those note received the necessary 75% will still be eligible for induction in the future.

Inductees will be invited to a special dinner hosted by JAQK Cellars during November Nine festivities.
