Justin “BoostedJ” Smith Betting on Big WSOP Debut
- Lance Bradley | May 20, 2009
He might only be 21 years old and playing in his first World Series of Poker next month, but Justin “BoostedJ” Smith is fairly confident that he’ll have a very good debut at the Rio and he’s willing to back it up with cold, hard cash.
The online poker phenom is willing to bet up to $5,000 at even money with anybody that he finishes with more WSOP Player of the Year points than any non-bracelet winner of the bettors choosing. Under the current WSOP POY model only players who cash in the open events earn points. He’s taking action from anybody at all so long as the player they choose to bet on doesn’t yet have a WSOP bracelet.
“I want the challenge and I also like money,” joked Smith, a regular in the high stakes mixed games online. ”Seriously though, I think I’m the favorite.” Smith said he also believes that his success in the mixed games variations is part of the reason he has an edge in this bet.
That’s not the only prop bet that Smith is offering to all comers. He’s also willing to bet that his team of three non-bracelet winners will win more bracelets during this Series than a team of any other three players who have yet to capture a bracelet. So who’s on his team? Justin Bonomo, Brett Richey and of course, himself.
“Definitely. No question about that,” said the 16th place finisher from the 2008 WSOP Europe Main Event. “Those two are the most +EV to be on my team.” Bonomo is coming off of his win at the WSOP Circuit event at Caesars Las Vegas and Richey cashed twice at the 2008 WSOP and has two Main Event cashes on his resume.
There is a bit of a wildcard for anybody willing to bet against Smith on either bet. A cash game specialist he says he’ll be passing up tournament play if the side game action is going strong.
“That’s a plus side variable for anyone willing to take me up on this. I plan on playing lots of tournaments but I can’t predict what the cash game action will be like. If it’s just way too good and insane, I won’t pass it up,” said Smith.
