Nevada Sets Precedent With First Intrastate Online Gaming Regulations

It hasn’t been a great year for online poker players in the United States, but Thursday’s news out of Nevada gives them a reason to look forward to 2012. On Thursday, the Nevada Gaming Commission passed regulations for intrastate poker meaning players in that state could be playing regulated online poker soon.
A 4-0 vote by the NGC allows companies with an NGC-issued online poker license to offer games to players inside the Nevada borders. Six companies that have already applied for licenses are Caesars Entertainment, Cantor Gaming, Shuffle Master, International Game Technology, Bally’s Technology and South Point. More companies are expected to follow with the first licenses being approved in the second quarter of 2012.
Players outside of Nevada would be unable to access any of the online poker sites. Any licensed company will need to prove to the NGC that they have established the necessary player controls before being able to open for business. These include preventing both underage and problem gamblers, a protocol for ensuring players are within state borders, accurate record keeping as well as the necessary fees and taxation.
Nevada is the only state to offer online poker regulations and the hope is that as attempts to continue to regulate the game at the federal level, Nevada is seen as the primary licensing body in the country.
