Annie Duke and Jeffrey Pollack Launch New Professional Poker League
- Kevin Mathers | January 18, 2011
Professional poker player Annie Duke is scheduled to be named commissioner of a new professional poker league featuring the biggest names on the tournament poker circuit. The unnamed series will feature four televised events starting in August, leading up to a $1,000,000 freeroll held January 2012. All tournaments will be held at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
The league is scheduled to feature up to 200 professional poker players, who will earn their way into the league based on a formula of finishes in major events, money earned and recent success, online play and cash games will not be considered. League memberships will consist of two-, three- or five-year terms with select players earning lifetime memberships based on the individual’s career success in poker.
Former WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack joins the league as its chairman while maintaining his current role as chairman of Professional Bull Riders, Inc. In a statement, Pollack said: “Membership in our league will signify standing as a true professional in poker. We’re going to apply a little more rigor to that definition.” Pollack also stated that he doesn’t feel the new league is competition to the World Series of Poker, World Poker Tour, and other tournament circuits, but will create its own tradition as players have to excel in major events to be considered for the league.
The league was created by a company called Federated Sports & Gaming, Inc., co-founded by Pollack and the founders of horse racing betting site Youbet.com.
