November Nine’s Dennis Phillips Hires Roy Winston for Coaching
- Lance Bradley | September 3, 2008
When Harrah’s Entertainment announced that the final table of the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event would be delayed until November, some of the WSOP brain trust were hoping that the final nine players would hire high profile coaches as they prepared for the final table.
And now it appears that the wish has been granted, at least by one member of the November Nine.
Dennis Phillips, who leads the way with 26,295,000 chips, has hired 2007 Borgata Poker Open champion Roy Winston and Oracle Poker Consulting to help him prepare to return to the felt on November 9. Winston and Joe McGowan will work on several aspects of Phillips’ game in the weeks leading up to the final table. From what he’s seen so far, Winston is impressed with Phillips and his play at the table.
“Dennis’s play so far has been extraordinary. My partner Joe McGowan and I are going to help with his preparation for the challenges he will face not only at the final table, but on the way there,” said Winston. “This is a unique experience to have weeks to prepare before play and we want Dennis to have every opportunity and will be there with him along the way.”
Phillips won his entry to the Main Event via a $200 satellite. The St. Louis native is anxious to get back into the action and chase down the most prestigious title in poker.
“I look forward to working with Roy & Joe and Oracle Poker Consulting over the next couple of months leading up to the Main Event,” said Phillips. “I’m confident in my game and don’t intend to change it, but I’m also smart enough to know that you can always learn more. Roy and Joe’s help and insight will be invaluable, not only in preparing for the final table but in helping me navigate through the many aspects of being in the poker spotlight.”
