Online Poker: OX45AL Wins $550,000 on Record-Setting Sunday
- Jessica Welman | February 1, 2010
The Super Bowl is still a week away, but Sunday at the virtual tables certainly felt like the Super Bowl of online poker as three of the biggest online sites threw massive marquee tournaments with millions of dollars on the line. Between UB Poker’s UBOC Main Event (you can read more about that here), the $1.5 Million Guarantee on Full Tilt and the $2 Million Sunday Million, there was quite a bit of cash up for grabs. To be more specific, there was over $6.7 million at stake in those three tournaments alone along with eleven six figure paydays. Even the Sunday Warm-Up had some serious cash at stake, with its first $1 million prize pool ever.
With so much added traffic to the sites, all of the majors saw increases in their tournament prize pools and there were several players who ended the day with what could fairly be described as life-changing sums of money in their accounts. The biggest sums were being offered in the PokerStars Sunday Million, whose promise of a $2 million prize pool drove more than 19,000 players to take part. Needless to say, the guarantee was destroyed, crushed and stomped into the ground by the turnout as there was over $3.8 million up for grabs with more than half a million dollars going to first place. The field, first place prize and prize pool were all record-setting amounts for the marquee event, breaking the record set last November when a $2.5 Million guarantee was placed on the tournament. Despite brief talks of a deal, there was no chop, so OX45AL took home the entirety of the first place prize, while the top five finishers all earned six figure paydays.
The lack of deal-making seemed to be infectious. Perhaps taking a cue from Gordon Gecko’s motto that “greed is good,” all but one of the major final tables played down to an outright winner. The only event that did come to some sort of chop was the Full Tilt $1.5 Million Guarantee. BankOfSweden and extassyman made a heads-up deal which saw each of them earn in excess of $200,000.
Both the Sunday Million and the $1.5 Million Guarantee lacked final tables populated with recognizable names, but there were a number of pros who banked sizeable scores on Sunday. Joe “CoeJassidy” Cassidy earned over $56,000 for his runner-up finish in the Sunday Mulligan, which also featured Steve “UFMan2” Burkholder and Jeremy “thechemist83” Gaubert at the final table. The Sunday 500 final table also boasted a tough line-up, including the likes of Team PokerStars pro Ruben “rubenrtv” Visser, Joe “bigegypt” Elpayaa, Matt “papamat25” Ilse and Tommy “TMoney0209” Miller.
