Online Poker: Townsend Takes His Turn at Isildur1
- Jessica Welman | November 26, 2009
Since it is Thanksgiving, it is only fitting that we here at BLUFF update you on something we are certainly thankful for—the endless stream of high profile, high stakes heads-up matches between the elusive “Isildur1” and the best and brightest names in the online poker world. So, before you carve up that turkey, take some time to feast on the action from the mystery Swede’s past 24 hours of action.
This past weekend may have featured Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, Tom “durrrr” Dwan and Isildur1, but on Wednesday Cardrunners instructor Brian Townsend decided he would step in the spotlight and take on Isildur1. Though the enigmatic Scandinavian booked matches with David Benyamine, Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies, Ivey and durrrr, but it was Townsend who stole the show. The stakes were lower for this match, as the players fired up the $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha tables instead of the $500/$1,000 games and what ensued was the slaughtering of Isildur1 to the tune of $1.1 million.
There have been several sessions involving Isildur1 in which more than $1 million changed hands, but most of those took place at the bigger buy-in tables. The duo logged more than 1,000 hands and it was Townsend who held the upper hand for the vast majority of the match. He consistently got the best of his opponent, though a couple of big pots like this one certainly didn’t hurt his cause:
Isildur1 was holding around $152,000 to Townsend’s nearly $400,000 when he raised to $1,200 preflop. Townsend reraised, making it $3,600 and Isildur1 repotted it, making it $10,800 to go. Townsend put in another raise to $32,400 and Isildur1 called. The flop fell T

and Townsend checked to his aggressive opponent. Isildur1 bet out pot (nearly $65,000) and Townsend reraised enough to put Isildur1 all-in for his remaining $55,000. The Swede called and showed 5

for the bigger straight. Isildur1 was drawing very slim and the 3

on the river were no help to him, so the $304,371 pot went to Townsend.
Isildur1 was able to recoup some of his losses in his sessions with Dwan, Benyamine and Ivey, but a losing session to Ziigmund combined with only small victories in the other matches meant Isildur dropped over $900,000 at the tables. He was right back at it this morning though, sparring with Ziigmund once again. Sahamies decided to call it quits earlier, but they planned to return to the tables later today. In the meantime, Rafi “howisitfeellike” Amit sat and tried to convince Isildur1 to play him heads-up, but Isildur1 pleaded fatigue and picked up for the time being.
If Isildur1 and Ziigmund sit back down on schedule, they should be hitting the felt around 4 or 5PM ET, which gives you railbirds just enough time to scarf down some turkey and dressing before snuggling up in front of the computer to spend the holiday watching the action.
