When Day 5 action began, there were more than twice as many hopefuls as 47 players returned to play down to the final two tables. Some players saw their tournament runs come to an end early, including the start of day chip leader, Juan Maceiras, who busted in 36th place. Tristan Clemencon (40th), Claire Renaut (35th), Giuseppe Pantaleo (27th), Anton Ionel (26th), and Joe Cassidy (21st) also busted over the course of the day.
Those notable names headed home over the course of Day 5, but others managed to make it to the last day of action before the six-week break between this event and the final table. Like Maceiras, Ludovic Lacay started the day with a big stack, but had a rough go of it at the tables. Unlike Maceiras, Lacay survived the day, but he is in less than stellar shape with 365,000.
Alexander Dozhenko (536,000), Sam Trickett (512,000), and Juha Helppi (366,000) will also return for Day 5 short on chips. They have a lot of ground to make up if they want to atch the two big stacks, Mustapha Kanit and Alexandre Coussy. Kanit ended the day on top with 2,357,000, while Coussy ended with 2,136,000.
Roger Hairabedian and Oleksii Kovalchuk ended the day third and fourth in chips, while Will Failla is in the middle of the pack with 775,000. Failla is currently thirteenth in the BLUFF Player of the Year race, but could make a big jump with a final table appearance in France.
Saturday the top eighteen will return to play down to the final table, which will take place on November 12th and 13th.
Here are the top ten chip counts headed into Day 5 of play in Cannes:
1. Kanita Mustapha – 2,357,000
2. Alexandre Coussy – 2,136,000
3. Roger Hairabedian – 1,826,000
4. Oleksii Kovalchuk – 1,608,000
5. Ilan Boujenah – 1,542,000
6. Mads Wissing – 1,400,000
7. Matthew Tyler – 1,073,000
8. Kamel Chhit – 806,000
9. Will Failla – 775,000
10. Fouad Behbehani – 624,000
