Florida online poker report
The Florida Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability has compiled a report on the future of online poker in the Sunshine State, one of portion of which includes open speculation about the possibility of legalizing and regulating online poker within Florida.
Scheduled to be presented to the Florida Senate by the end of November, the 12-page report lays out three scnearios for what will become of online poker within Florida over the next three years: explicitly prohibiting it, expressly legalizing it, and deferring any action on the issue to the federal government in Washington. The report lays out pros and cons of each approach, noting specifically that there will be no consumer protections in place for the state’s poker players if Florida decides to defer to the federal government on this issue and that any statewide prohibition would be very difficult to enforce. The prospect of revenue generated by legal, regulated online poker in Florida is also brought up, though the report doesn’t give any firm numbers as to how much revenue there could be next year.

More details emerge in Oscarsson murder case
The mysterious death of PokerListings founder Andreas Oscarsson continues to grow even more mysterious as new details come to light. Pokerati has a full run-down today of what’s known about the case so far.
For starters, another man by the name of Andreas Oscarsson from the same small town in Sweden as the PokerListings founder was murdered a few months before and police now believe the victim was killed because he was mistaken for the Oscarsson of PokerListings. Then there’s the mysterious “44-year-old man” who’s been charged with racketeering and extortion, for employing the former president of the Swedish Hell’s Angels as his muscle while trying to extract $2 million from Oscarsson that was supposedly owed to PokerListings investor Stefan Bengtsson, the nephew of the richest man in Sweden. And finally there’s one of Oscarsson financial advisers being shot in the leg as the 44-year-old man was trying to get the $2 million from Oscarsson.
It’s taken several months to get to the point where we know this much about the case, so expect more details to come along slowly.

Poland bans online gambling
While the rest of Europe begins opening its doors to online poker and casinos, the Eastern European nation of Poland has decided to take a step in the other direction, outlawing gambling everywhere but in live casinos throughout the country.
The crackdown on all forms of gambling outside of casinos, including online poker, comes after there was talk of raising the tax rate on online casinos. The sudden about-face is related to the scandal that has plagued Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s administration, in which a number of key ministers have been forced to resign over allegations that they were engaged in corrupt practices with members of the online gambling industry. Tusk has announced that he plans to have the legislation signed into law by November 30, adding Poland to the list of nations like the United States with legal hurdles that have to be jumped in order to play online poker.
The law is likely to eventually face challenges from the European Commission, the EU’s executive branch, which has gone after other EU nations in the past that have passed laws limiting or outlawing the online gambling market.

Mama Negreanu dies
And finally, Annie Negreanu, the mother of four-time WSOP bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu, died early this morning after a long illness. Mrs. Negreanu suffered a stroke and a mild heart attack earlier this year and was hospitalized for several surgeries and a lengthy recovery, all of which her son chronicled on his Full Contact Poker blog.
Negreanu and his mother were close. Today he wrote of her:
Full of life and laughter, super friendly to any and everyone. All her neighbors loved her. Not just liked her, but I sensed that they loved her for real. I’m so lucky to have been raised by her. So many people, I think, loved her so much because they wished they had a mother like her. I genuinely believe that. I was lucky.
She loved to dance and laugh. Some of my best memories as a kid were at dinner parties she’d throw at the house. As always, a monster feast, music, lots of wine and drinks… my dad telling jokes that had everyone laughing, then dancing in the living room.
You know how some people never feel like their parents are proud of them? That was never in question with my mother. She always told me and showed me how proud she was of me without fail. I always felt loved by her and that’s an irreplaceable bond and feeling. She told me she loved me… EVERY day. I mean every… single… day.
Our deepest condolences go to Daniel and his family in their time of mourning.
