DAILY BUZZ: Russian Sets World Record, Moon Profile, Soulier Signs

Welcome to the BLUFF Daily Buzz, where we scour the entire internet for all the latest news in and around the world of poker. If it involves chips and cards, or people known to associate with chips and cards, we’re there.

“Red Dawn” alert: Russian breaks world record

In the online world poker world there are grinders, and then there are players like Russia’s “innerspy.” The 22-year-old set a new world record by logging 40,088 hands on PokerStars in 18 hours and 33 minutes, more than twice the number he had ever managed in the past. So what inspired him to this feat of poker madness? A challenge on a Russian poker forum.

“Before this challenge, I had never actually played more than 20,000 hands in a day before, but the idea came up and I just figured I could do it,” innerspy told the PokerStars blog. “It was one of the toughest things I have ever accomplished, but I am proud I managed it. I gained a lot of experience doing this and will definitely try it again in order to improve upon my result.”

Darvin over the Moon to be back home

Darvin Moon doesn’t remind me that much of Steve Dannenmann, Moon’s fellow Marylander who also finished second in the WSOP Main Event back in 2005, but one thing the two share in common is that neither was too eager to jump into the spotlight that shines so brightly on every player who’s crowned world champion. So while 21-year-old Joe Cada is soaking up the experience, Moon is perfectly happy on the fringe of the poker world back home in western Maryland.

In a relatively in-depth feature on Moon, the Howard County Times paints a picture of a man who doesn’t regret a moment of his experience. He still says that his performance in the Main Event was mostly luck, and that he isn’t planning to travel the world playing poker tournaments but will most likely return to Vegas for the WSOP. He also says that while he got hit pretty hard on taxes – more than $1.9 million of his $5.1 million prize – the remaining amount is more than enough for him. “What do you do with a check with that amount of money? No one is worth that kind of money,” said Moon.

Though he purchased a new modular home for himself and his wife and a new truck for his nephew, the logger has mostly been busy since the Main Event spending time in his community, including mentoring four local youths on “Junior Deer Hunt Day.” And his next hunting protege might be none other than his fellow November Niner, Phil Ivey. “He told me he’s never hunted before, that at age 12, he had a shot a gun, but he would really like to learn how to shoot,” said Moon. “So I told him to come out hunting with me.”

Everest Poker signs Fabrice Soulier

With one French pro already contracted in the form of WSOP Main Event third-place finisher Antoine Saout, online room Everest Poker has gone for a Gallic double-dip by signing accomplished pro Fabrice Soulier to its roster of sponsored players.

Soulier enjoyed a successful WSOP this year with seven cashes, including the final table of the $1,500 HORSE event and a 49th-place finish in the Main Event. Previous to this year he had three WSOP final tables and one WPT final table to his credit. He has been sponsored by a number of online rooms in the past, including ChiliPoker and Full Tilt Poker, and ranks ninth on the all-time French money list with $1.5 million in tournament earnings.

Amateur Poker Tour’s founder was a serial swindler

And finally, today the Denver News blog Westword has more information on Amateur Poker Tour founder Matt Sowash, who yesterday was sentenced to five years in jail and five years of probation.

It appears that Sowash was something of a serial business swindler. Before starting the APT he operated a business called Market My Business, which collected $130,000 from three investors and promised to find suitable business opportunities for them; the money, which was supposed to have been secured in an escrow account, was “lost.” And when he started the APT he gathered another $330,000 in investments, all without telling the eight investors of his many failed business ventures as required by Colorado law, or of his previous bankruptcy filings, or of the multiple civil lawsuits in which he is named as a defendant. That money was “lost” as well.

Sowash pleaded guilty to losing other people’s money – also known as “theft,” a class three felony. His APT partner and co-defendant, Andrew Hicks, has yet to stand trial.
