Poker Players Alliance Now Rating Members of Congress
- Lance Bradley | October 16, 2008
The Poker Players Alliance has launched a new website that will provide ratings for each member of Congress based on their record of supporting the rights of poker players. The PPA Congressional Ratings Guide is available to PPA members at www.congressionalpoker.org.
“As PPA continues its efforts to educate members of Congress about poker as a game of skill, it is important that PPA members know how their member of Congress stands on the issue of protecting their rights to play poker online,” said Alfonse D’Amato, chairman of the PPA. “The PPA Congressional Ratings Guide will make such information easily available as well as provide PPA members an easy way to contact their Congressional representatives and underscore their support for this great American pastime.”
The current guide lists 164 members of Congrees who have earned a grade above B. Those members have all show strong support for poker rights and the grade is meant to reflect that. The scary number for poker players is that 258 members, just less than 50%, received a failing grade.
To properly grade the members the Congressional Ratings Guide is based on co-sponsorship of bills, Congressional letters of support, public statements and private meetings with the PPA and our members versus actual votes on the floor of the House or Senate. There were 113 members who did not receive a rating since their position and activity were minimal.
The PPA Congressional Rating Guide will be periodically updated and will provide PPA member the ability to search by state or zip code so they can see how their local representatives stand in the eyes of the PPA. Members will also be able to automatically send an email to their member of Congress directly from the guide to voice their support for poker and those who protect their right to play this game of skill.
