PokerStars Signs International WPT TV Sponsorship Deal
- Jason Kirk | May 7, 2009
Season VII of the World Poker Tour is only day old, but when its tournaments finally hit the airwaves around the world they’ll be sponsored by online poker giant PokerStars.
WPT Enterprises announced today that it has signed a deal with PokerStars, the world’s largest poker room, for the exclusive gaming sponsorship for broadcasts of WPT Season VII in Canada, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. As with the programs shown in the United States, those programs will feature commentary from Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten.
Another part of the deal will see PokerStars and WPTE collaborate to create localized programs for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking territories in Latin America, featuring native commentators. WPTE has previously rolled out such localized versions of its television program in France, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, South Korea, and Macedonia. The new Spanish and Portuguese versions should be a natural fit given PokerStars’ vast experience with the poker market in Latin America.
“TV sponsorship is an important part of our business, so having the biggest company in the poker industry jump on board is an exciting way to start international distribution of Season VII,” said Steve Lipscomb, Founder and CEO of WPT Enterprises. “We look forward to working with PokerStars as we roll out the latest WPT programming to fans in these territories.”
Prior to passage of the UIGEA in 2006, the WPT and PokerStars had been partners in another venture: the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure was a regular stop on the WPT tournament schedule.
