Power Rankings: Mizzi Closes in on Mercier After Tallinn Score
- Jessica Welman | September 1, 2010
If you’re a frequent reader of TwoPlusTwo, you might be aware the Sorel Mizzi has had a less than stellar week off the felt, thanks to a potential cheating scandal and his recent admission that he used multiple Full Tilt Poker screennames following his lifetime ban from the site in 2007.
Red hot forum thread aside, Mizzi still shows no signs of slowing down on the live circuit inching closer and closer to Jason Mercier in the BLUFF/ESPN Power Rankings. A runner-up finish in the EPT Tallinn High Rollers event secured Mizzi 175 POY points, which puts him within 100 points of catching the man whose top spot in the Power Rankings has come to feel like a foregone conclusion.
While Mizzi blazes the European tournament trail, Mercier hasn’t logged as much time at the tables. The 2009 BLUFF Player of the Year took part in the WPT Legends of Poker Main Event and taped some sessions of the PokerStars Big Game, but hasn’t logged a cash since the WSOP Main Event. Eric Baldwin, who currently sits third in the ranks, also took some time away from the tables, but returned for Legends of Poker as well.
Neither Mercier nor Baldwin cashed in last week’s WPT event, but both will be heading to London shortly for the WSOPE. Mizzi, meanwhile, is already in Europe, busting out of the PokerStars EPT Villamoura event early on. Mizzi skipped the WPT London Main Event, but he could potentially turn up for the High Roller tournament later this week or he may turn up at the Partouche Poker Tour stop in Cannes.
Daniel Alaei sits at number four in the ranks and Michael Binger rounds out the top five. Scott Clements is just a few points behind Binger though, so it will only take one dropped score from years past for Clements to surge ahead.
Here are the current top twenty in the BLUFF/ESPN Power Rankings:
1. Jason Mercier – 1,907.48
2. Sorel Mizzi – 1,822.50
3. Eric Baldwin – 1,442.96
4. Daniel Alaei – 1,281.64
5. Michael Binger – 1,190.52
6. Scott Clements – 1,183.92

11. Bertrand Grospellier – 979.75
12. Men Nguyen – 922.23
