POY: Speidel Surpasses Duhamel to Take the Top Spot
- Jessica Welman | January 31, 2012
When we saw how many 2012 BLUFF Player of the Year points Jonathan Duhamel amassed after his big run at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, we thought it would take weeks for someone to threaten him for the top spot. Turns out it wasn’t a matter of weeks. It was a matter of days.
Just one week after Duhamel premiered in the top spot of our debut rankings of the year, he has been usurped. Aussie Millions Main Event winner Oliver Speidel is the new number one thanks to his $1.6 million victory in the Main Event along with two other Aussie Millions final tables. In addition to 2012 earnings that trail only Phil Ivey and PCA Main Event winner John Dibella, Speidel also picked up enough POY points to take a lead of less than ten points over Duhamel.
The Aussie Millions was also a productive trip for Faraz Jaka, who followed up his PCA Main Event final table with a second place finish in the AUD$2,500 Six-Handed No Limit Hold’em Event. That score helped to boost him to fourth in the ranks behind the third-ranked Dibella.
The player who rounds out the top five is Phil Ivey, whose 12th place finish in the Main Event combined with his career-high score in the AUD$250,000 event put his yearly earnings at more than $2.2 million and gives him 308.65 POY points. The only other new addition to the top ten is Aussie Millions Main Event runner-up Ken Wong, who enters the ranks in eighth.
The bottom half of the top twenty features several new names, including Beau Rivage Million Dollar Heater Champ John Dolan (12th), Aussie Millions opening event chap Brendon Rubie (16th), WSOPC Los Angeles winner Freddy Deeb (18th) and Jason Koon (20th). The large number of new contenders resulted in many players dropping down the ranks and eight players to drop out of the top twenty entirely.
