SCOOP: Wins for Gordo16, Tcblade and RehabJack in Events #6 & #7

Five Card Draw and Heads-up No Limit Hold’em may be one of the more unusual pairings we’ve seen in the world of card playing, but this odd couple of events on the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) schedule proved to have some interesting results, including big showings from past winners, deep runs from PokerStars pros and online regulars alike and some tough final table action in which chopping was never an option.  Here’s the scoop on Events #6 and #7 of the SCOOP:

SCOOP Event #6: Pot Limit 5-Card Draw

It may be the version of the game that many casual poker fans think of when they think of “poker”, but 5 Card Draw isn’t exactly the most popular game around. Even though it doesn’t have the draw of Texas Hold’em though, all three of the 5 Card Draw SCOOP tournaments easily met their guarantee as over 5,000 entrants took part in the event, including last year’s SCOOP Medium buy-in Main Event Jean “JannotLapin” Daligault, who final tabled the High buy-in tournament of this event. Here is how everything boiled down:

Low ($10 buy-in)
Prize Pool: $42,450
Entrants: 4,245

No, the winner of this event is not *that* Benny Binion.  He is, however, the recipient of the top prize of nearly $6,500.

It was a small field, which is to be expected for a game that is distinctly lacking any online specialists.  Still, big names like Sorel “zangbezan24″ Mizzi (14th) and Johan Steindl (15th0 both found a way to make the money, while previous SCOOP Champion JannotLapin found himself at the final table:

Seat 1: highland (118,125)
Seat 2: Wing-Tsun (27,220)
Seat 3: RehabJack (41,905)
Seat 4: TabberNackle (30,095)
Seat 5: Jean “JannotLapin” Daligault (138,998)
Seat 6: Fishbone72 (128,657)

When the final table began, the top six players were divided between the haves and have-nots at the 600/1,200 ante 300 blind level. It took less than one orbit around the table before TabberNackle found himself all-in. RehabJack raised the pot in middle position and TabberNackle reraised all-in from the button. RehabJack called and each player drew one. TabberNackle revealed AAK55 for aces up, but RehabJack had him bested with 88TTT for tens full of eights and eliminated TabberNackle in 6th place.

The very next hand, RehabJack found himself in a similar situation when he raised to 4,200, Fishbone72 called on the button and Wing-Tsun called out of the big blind. Wing-Tsun and RehabJack drew three, Fishbone72 drew two and Wing-Tsun checked. RehabJack bet 9,800, Fishbone72 raised to 23,800, Wing-Tsun folded and RehabJack moved all-in for almost 57,000. Fishbone72 called with AAA92 for trip aces, but RehabJack once again made a full house, this time showing QQQJJ to double up to over 128,000.

After that hand, Wing-Tsun was the low man on the totem pole, dipping as low as 13,000. Wing-Tsun had worked his way back up 26,000 at the 700/1,4000 ante 350 blind level when Jean “JannotLapin” Daligault raised in the cutoff, Fishbone72 called on the button and Wing-Tsun repotted it to 19,250 out of the big blind. JannotLapin folded while Fishbone72 called. Wing-Tsun drew two cards, Fishbone drew one and Wing-Tsun moved in for his last 6,470. Fishbone72 made the easy call with AAA22 for aces full, which had Wing-Tsun’s trip nines beat. Wing-Tsun was eliminated in 5th place and Fishbone72 jumped up to 130,000.

Play continued 4-handed for several rounds without an elimination, but JannotLapin and Fishbone72 were getting low on chips. Highland raised the button, JannotLapin reraised to 11,500 out of the big blind, highland repotted it to 37,500 and JannotLapin moved all-in for just more than that. Highland called and drew three while JannotLapin opted to draw two. JannotLapin showed K7QQQ for trip queens, but highland had him bested with AAAK3, so JannotLapin was ousted in 4th.

Fishbone72 was down to 40,0000 while RehabJack and highland were hovering around 200,000 chips apiece, so it seemed like he would be the next to go. That was not the case though, as highland raised out of the small blind at the 1,000/2,000 ante 500 level and RehabJack reraised to 14,000. Highland responded by making it 30,000 to go and RehabJack upped the stakes by raising to 91,500. Highland moved all-in, RehabJack called, highland drew two, Rehabjack stood pat and the cards were turned over. RehabJack had a flush with AQ642 while highland held TTT97 for trip tens. RehabJack took the huge pot and pushed his chip lead over the other two players to more than 10-1.

A short while later, RehabJack finished off highland when he missed his spade flush draw while RehabJack stood pat with a wheel. Highland’s elimination in 3rd set up a lopsided heads-up match in which Fishbone72 held only a couple thousand chips to RehabJack’s more than 480,000.

Fishbone72 was able to double up once, but the second time was not so effective. Fishbne72 moved all-in preflop, RehabJack called, Fishbone72 drew three and RehabJack drew one. Fishbone72 showed AQQ93 for a pair of queens, but RehabJack had that bested with JJ997 for two pair. RehabJack took the pot, the match and the SCOOP title worth over $25,0000.

1st: RehabJack ($25,220.00)
2nd: Fishbone72 ($16,975.00)
3rd: highland ($12,610.00)
4th: Jean “JannotLapin” Daligault ($8,245.00)
5th: Wing-Tsun ($6,305.00)
6th: TabberNackle ($4,365.00

SCOOP Event #7: Heads-Up No Limit Hold’em

Some argue that heads-up poker is a format that tests a poker player’s skills. Others suggest it is too high variance to put much stock in heads-up tournaments. Love them or hate them, heads-up events continue to grow in popularity and this year’s first SCOOP heads-up event was no exception, as each of the three tournaments easily bested their guarantees to create some hefty prize pools.

If the name SebbyGl looks familiar, it is because he was all over last fall’s WCOOP and made a return to the final table in the low buy-in heads-up event tonight. Ultimately, he lost out to style09 in the final battle, but he still pocketed a nice $13,000 payday on his $15 investment and added another line to his long list of results. Style09, in the meantime, picked up over $22,500 for his big win.

The forums were chattering as Cardrunners instructor Mike “gordo16” Gordon continued to advance through the late stages of the Medium buy-in tournament. Posters wrote things like “watch out for gordo” and even expressed pity for those who had to go up against such a formidable foe. The warnings were well-deserved as Gordon cruised to an outright victory worth over $50,000.

The High buy-in tournaments of this SCOOP have really been living up the hype of being stacked to the brim with all the top online poker talent you can find. The heads-up event saw a large crop of big names turn up for the tournament, several of which advanced into the money rounds. As the field shrank and shrank, there were still several online regulars who staved off elimination to make it into the top 32, including Stephen “stevie444” Chidwick (16th) and Tim “Tim0thee” Adams (21st). Both Frank “RaineTech” Calo and Matt “ADZ124” Marafioti made it all the way to the quarterfinals, but neither were able to advance into the final four, which saw Shirtz17 square off against DDBeast and the eventual champion tcblade take on Thiago “XTheDecanoX” Nishijima.

Shirtz17 was the first player to advance to the finals. He picked off a bluff from DDBeast when he called a river bet on a board of 942TA holding KT, which had Shirtz17’s J5 for jack high bested. That hand gave him a substantial lead and he never looked back. On the final hand of play, the duo got it all-in on a board of T638 with Shirtz17 holding T6 for two pair, while DDBeast held JT for top pair. The river Q ensured the match belonged to Shirtz17, who had a little time to rest and do some reconnaissance as tcblade and XTheDecanoX duked it out.

XTheDecanoX took the early lead in the other semi-final bout, thanks to a big hand where he picked up pocket kings to tcblade’s AQ. Tcblade was able to slowly chip back up though and got a big double up when he raised preflop at the 30/60 blind level and XTheDecanoX called. Both checked the K82 flop and XThDecanoX bet out 250 when the J fell on the turn. Tcblade called and the river brought the Q. XTheDecanoX shoved all-in to the 910 chip pot, putting tcblade at a decision for his remaining 3,000 chips. Tcblade called with AT for a rivered straight, which had XTheDecanoX’s QJ bested. The match ended when tcblade put XTheDecanoX all-in when he picked up A3 and XTheDecanoX called with pocket nines. An ace on the flop spelled disaster for XTheDecanoX and tcblade advanced to the finals.

At the outset of the final round, both tcblade and Shirtz17 began with 5,000 chips at the 25/50 blind levels. Despite the super deep stacks, it took very little time for some big pots to develop. Tcblade rivered a straight holding pocket sixes on an 83254 board to pick up a 2,400 chip pot and take a big chip lead and, just ten hands later, the match was decided with the following hand:

Shirtz17 minraised at the 30/60 blind level and tcblade 3-bet to 480. Shirtz17 called and they saw the flop fall QT8. Tcblade checked, Shirtz17 bet 690 and tcblade check-raised all-in. Shirtz17 called with Q9 for top pair with a gutshot, but tcblade’s AQ had his pair outkicked. The 3 on the turn changed nothing and the 8 on the river gave tcblade the outright win worth $192,000.

1st: tcblade ($192,000.00)
2nd: Shirtz17 ($99,840.00)
3rd: Thiago “XTheDecanoX” Nishijima ($53,760.00)

5th: Fred_Brink ($24,576.00)

7th: Frank “RaineTech” Calo ($24,576.00)
