Borgata Winter Open Champion Steven Weinstein

The 2009 Borgata Winter Open could just be one of the biggest tournaments in Atlantic City this year and nobody’s happier than Steven Weinstein.

The action started Thursday with 27 players including 2007 BLUFF Magazine Player-of-the-Year Bill Edler and ended with Weinstein eliminating Todd Terry after 13 hours of play to capture his first live title and the $658,405 first place prize.

Edler, who failed to record a single cash in 2008, finished 18th for $18,306 despite coming into the day with the second largest chip stack.

When heads-up play began Terry held a 4:1 chip advantage of Weinstein but the player known online as “thorladen” chipped away before scoring a key double-up to put himself in position to win the title. Terry walked away with $434,767.

The $3,000 + $200 buy-in championship event had a field of 1,017 and a total prize pool of over $3 million making it one of the largest independent tournaments of the year.
