The 2009 BLUFF Magazine Player of the Year will also win this Orange County Chopper courtesy of the new presenting sponsor, LUGZ.

BLUFF Media, the poker industry’s leading media organization, is proud to announce that the 2009 Player of the Year award now has a presenting sponsor, Lugz Footwear, and the sponsorship comes with a nice perk for whichever poker superstar walks away with the award – a custom built Orange County Chopper.

“We’re thrilled to have Lugz on board as a presenting sponsor,” said Eric Morris, co-founder of BLUFF Media and BLUFF Magazine. “We’re proud that we’ve been able to attract a non-industry sponsor to help increase the prestige of the award.”

The POY award is awarded to the poker player who has the best results over the course of an entire calendar year. Points are awarded for each tournament finish based on the tournament buy-in and the size of the field. Previous winners include Phil Ivey, Chad Brown and reigning Player of the Year John Phan.

“LUGZ is very excited to be sponsoring Bluff Magazine’s Player of the Year Program. The aggressiveness of these players and the pride they take in their craftsmanship in such a synergy of our own brand,” said Larry Schwartz, Executive Vice President of Lugz. “And being able to award this Player of the Year with the Lugz custom build OCC Chopper seemed like the perfect move.”

The bike was built in 2006 by Orange County Choppers and was revealed to the world during episodes of Discovery Channel’s American Chopper. The next stop for the custom built bike could be the garage of some of poker’s biggest names. Michael Binger currently leads the 2009 POY race but Bertrand Grospellier, Jeff Madsen and Scotty Nguyen are all in contention.

BLUFF Magazine Announces 2009 Power 20

BLUFF Magazine, the poker industry’s leading publication, today released their annual list of poker’s most influential and powerful entities, the BLUFF Power 20, in their February issue. The entity at the top of the list should be no surprise to anybody who’s watched the growth of the game and the industry over the past five years; the World Series of Poker.

“Every year the World Series of Poker is the highlight of the calendar,” said Eric Morris, co-founder and publisher and BLUFF. “The fact that the rest of the poker industry bases their operations around what Jeffrey Pollack, Ty Stewart and the WSOP are doing makes it the easy pick for the top spot.”

Sitting in second position is another name familiar to the top end of the list, online poker giant PokerStars.com. In the past 12 months PokerStars has launched professional poker tours in Latin America and Australia/New Zealand while continuing to dominate the online poker industry.

“An operation of that size is impressive enough, but PokerStars keeps finding ways to increase their player base while expanding the overall reach of the game of poker,” said Morris. “They’re the world’s largest poker room and it’s hard to imagine that won’t continue – even as more and more markets move to a regulated environment.”

The 2009 list also recognized a blog for the first time. Poker gossip site WickedChopsPoker.com was ranked #20, marking the first time a non-traditional media outlet was recognized in the Power 20.

“The work done by WickedChopsPoker to develop a large audience and regular following in the poker industry is no different than that of TMZ in the entertainment industry,” said Morris. “They regularly break stories and have developed an insider’s take on the industry. Most of the pros read wickedchopspoker.com on a regular basis.”

The complete Power 20 is available in the February issue of BLUFF Magazine which is on newsstands now. Also featured in this issue is a cover story on online poker cash game phenom Tom “durrrr” Dwan and his Million Dollar Challenge.

David “The Maven” Chicotsky Captures Online Player-of-the-Year

BLUFF Magazine has declared 2008 the year of The Maven. Or maybe more accurately David Chicotsky did everything to ensure 2008 would be remembered as his year as he captured the BLUFF Magazine Online Poker Player-of-the-Year award with an incredible finish.

Chicotsky, known online as “The Maven” put together an amazing final three weeks to vault himself past both Jon “PearlJammer” Turner and Chris “Moorman1″ Moorman to take home the most prestigous title in online poker.

“At the start of December this looked like a two-horse race between Jon Turner and Chris Moorman but David showed how badly he wanted this by playing as much as he did the last three weeks,” said Eric Morris, publisher of BLUFF Magazine. “It just goes to show how important this award really is and we couldn’t have a more deserving champion.”

Chicotsky finished the year with 455,719 OPOY points and was the only player to break the 400,000 barrier. Moorman, who wound up second, posted 399,747 while third place finisher Turner scored 391,346. Moorman and Turner both took some time away from the online game at the end of the year to play some live events. Chicotsky obviously hunkered down and went to work.

Between his PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker accounts Chicotsky played a staggering 1,078 tournaments. He won 10 of them, made the final table in 74 of  them and cashed in a total of 161 tournaments. His total profit for the month on those two sites alone was $48,296.

“Both Turner and Moorman had incredible years and should be commended for their success,” said Morris. “Chicotsky was in the mix for the entire year and when he saw an opportunity to improve his ranking he stepped up and proved that he was a worthy Player-of-the-Year.”

Players earn POY points throughout the calendar year based on their finish in online poker tournaments on Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars, Bodog Poker, Absolute Poker and UltimateBet. For a complete breakdown of the 2008 race visit http://www.bluffmagazine.com/players/2008-online-poy-rankings.asp.

John Phan Wins 2008 BLUFF Magazine Player-of-the-Year

John Phan broke through in 2008 with his first two World Series of Poker bracelets and his first World Poker Tour title at the Legends of Poker. While three titles in a single year would be good enough for most professional poker players, Phan gets to add one more: BLUFF Magazine Player-of-the-Year.

Phan joins Bill EdlerChad Brown and Phil Ivey as previous winners of poker’s most prestigious award. The win wasn’t easy for Phan though, he held off fellow pros David PhamBertrand Grospellier and a late charge from Michael Binger.

“Phan’s year was certainly one of the most impressive in recent memory. With two bracelets and a WPT win he’s earned the right to call himself BLUFF Magazine Player-of-the-Year,” said Eric Morris, publisher of BLUFF Magazine. “The closeness of the race goes to show that the changes to our points system made the race fair and exciting for poker fans around the world.”

Phan’s year included a win in Event #29 ($3,000 No Limit Hold’em) where he outlasted 715 other players to take home the bracelet and the $434,789 first place prize money. He followed that up with another bracelet win a week later in Event #40 ($2,500 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball) that saw him earn another $151,911 for besting a field of 238 players.

His biggest cash however came in late August at the WPT’s Legends of Poker event. With 373 of the world’s best players putting up the $10,000 buy-in Phan emerged with his third win of the year and a $1,116,428 payday. Phan finished the year with 1,214.1 POY points, just ahead of Binger who wound up with 1,183.67 POY points. Binger went as far as travelling to Atlantic City for the final eligible event of 2008, the Trump Classic. Needing to win the event to pass Phan, Binger only managed a third place finish.

“Seeing a competitor travel across the country during the holiday season for a shot at winning this title really speaks to the prestige and honor professional poker players see in the award,” said Morris. “That’s what makes our winner so deserving – the race wasn’t really over until the final event of the year.”

Bluff Media Acquires Woman Poker Player Magazine

Bluff Media, publishers of America’s leading poker magazine Bluff Magazine, today announced the purchase of the print component of Woman Poker Player magazine.

“Woman Poker Player magazine was founded as a vehicle for the encouragement of women to play poker. At that time women were only representing about ten percent of live players, and this is no longer the case,” said Maryann Morrison, publisher of Woman Poker Player. “We all know women are fierce poker players and have substantially grown in numbers over the past two years. It is not a progressive step for women to have segregation in poker since everyone can play on an equal basis.”

Recognizing that female players make up one of the fastest growing segments of the poker market Bluff Media believes the acquisition is a strong move to further strengthen its position as an industry leader.

“We’re very happy to accept Woman Poker Player’s readers into the Bluff community,” said Eric Morris, co-president and publisher of Bluff Media. “As women are beginning to make up a larger percentage of the overall player base it’s important that our magazine properly reflects this and we feel that this move does just that.”

While subscribers to Woman Poker Player magazine will now receive Bluff Magazine on a monthly basis the website, www.womanpokerplayer.com, will continue to provide loyal readers with the same quality content they’ve come to expect.

“I am pleased that Bluff Media has agreed to continue servicing our subscribers. Bluff offers excellent poker education for all poker players, and is a valuable resource in the poker community,” said Morrison.

Chad Brown Named Bluff Magazine’s Poker Player of The Year

Chad Brown is Bluff Magazine’s Poker Player of the Year 2006, and in his own words: “Winning player of the year is like an actor wining an Oscar”.

Chad Brown has been honoured with the Title of Bluff Magazine’s Player of the Year 2006. Brown, a professional poker player who has been playing poker since boyhood, considers this one of his greatest achievements. In an upcoming interview with Bluff Magazine, Brown commented on his title:

“This is an enormous accomplishment to be very proud of. To put this in context, if I was acting, it would be like I won an Oscar at the Academy Awards.”

But Brown is no stranger to winning. His tournament history is, after all, what gained him this title. But Brown draws a distinction between being player of the year and being the winner of a major tournament. “It’s not like winning a tournament. Anyone can get lucky one day and win a tournament. But all the best players in the world play all the big main events and the Player of the Year award is defined by (your achievements) in all the major tournaments.”

Bluff’s proprietary ranking system awards points to players who finish in the money in North American poker tournaments with at least a $5,000 buy-in, where there are at least 100 competitors. Brown scored a total of 470.44 points throughout 2006, beating runner-up JohnnyBax by almost 30 points.

“Our Player of The Year is our highest player honor.” said publisher Eric Morris, “It is one of the few honors in the poker world which considers all major poker achievements throughout the year, transcending the boundaries of poker associations and tournament series.”

Chad Brown’s interview will appear in the April edition of Bluff Magazine, on Newsstands across North America, Europe and Australia.
