A.M. SCRAMBLE: The Beat Does Not Go On, November Nine Reunion, Twitter Wants Peace

It’s Hump Day and we’re bringing the A.M. Scramble to you with some funny, some insight and unfortunately some sad news from the poker world.

Award Winning The Poker Beat Records Last Show

Just two weeks ago PokerRoad.com’s The Poker Beat grabbed it’s second consecutive BLUFF Reader’s Choice Award and on Tuesday they decided to quit while they’re ahead. The host, Scott Huff, announced at the beginning of the show that due largely to his hectic schedule Wednesday’s show would be their last. Show regulars BJ Nemeth, Gary Wise, Dan Michalski and BLUFF Managing Editor Jessica Welman recorded a two-hour show finale. You can listen to the final episode here. We’re not sure where you can send flowers though.

Somebody Not in The November Nine Wins November Nine Reunion Tournament

Foxwoods Casino’s November Nine Reunion Tournament played down to a winner Tuesday and it wasn’t Jonathan Duhamel, John Racener, Joseph Cheong, Michael Mizrachi, Filippo Candio, Soi Nguyen, Jason Senti, Matt Jarvis or John Dolan who came out the winner. How’s that possible? Well, joining the November Nine in the November Nine Reunion Tournament were various qualifiers from Foxwoods Casino as well as Foxwoods’s own Bernard Lee. The winner was Ben Hopkins and he earned $5,000. Jarvis finished second.

Final Table Results

  1. Ben Hopkins
  2. Matt Jarvis
  3. Bill Raynor
  4. Anthony Palladino
  5. Jonathan Duhamel
  6. Bernard Lee
  7. Michael Mizrachi
  8. Joseph Washington
  9. Rick Grygeil

Michael Mizrachi apparently wasn’t too disappointed with his seventh place finish as he’s also the chip leader after Day 1 of the $300 Mega Stack.

Online Poker Company Gets Creative With TV Spot and Fails Miserably At Being Funny

Look, we get it. Smaller online poker rooms have to take some risks to get the attention of the poker world. Cool Hand Poker put out a TV ad a little more than two years ago and it’s only now getting some attention. InfiniteEdgeGaming.com just posted their thoughts on it and called the “Worst Ever”. We’re going to go ahead and agree. Here it is, judge for yourselves.

GSN’s Hiring of Norm MacDonald isn’t Getting Rave Reviews

When GSN sent out a press release earlier this week announcing that Gabe Kaplan was being replaced by Norm MacDonald as the play-by-play guy on High Stakes Poker it turned some heads. Kaplan is considered by most to be the gold standard for poker commentators and to put a professional comedian in his place seems a bit odd. ESPN.com’s Andrew Feldman has a great breakdown of the decision and kind of takes GSN to task for their decision.

It Appears That Twitter Has a Funny Bone or a Desire for Peace

Early Monday morning Terrence Chan posted a picture on his Facebook account with the caption: “I got this a long time ago, but never got around to posting it. Twitter has a great sense of humour.”. Here’s the photo:

LOL @ Twitter

Anybody who’s been around poker for less than four years might not find this rather ironic so we’ll provide you with some backstory. Actually, Chan will.

Voting Now Open for BLUFF Reader’s Choice Awards

For six years now BLUFF has given readers and poker fans around the world their chance to have their voice heard with the BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards.

Over the past week BLUFF has released the nominees in each of the 14 categories generating considerable discussion in the poker community.

“Some of the categories from year’s past are gone and we’ve brought in some fresh ones, like Favorite Poker Hostess and Breakthrough Performance of the Year,” said Lance Bradley, Editor in Chief of BLUFF. “We want to give poker fans something to talk about, argue about and vote on.”

Voting is open now and will remain open until January 16, 2011. Click here to vote now

Some of the most popular categories are still on the list. Readers still get to be in on the Favorite Poker Blog, Favorite Poker Podcast and Favorite Online Poker Room voting.

Winners will be announced in mid-January and will be featured in the March issue of BLUFF Magazine.

Click the categories below to view the nominees.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Breakout Performance of the Year

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. The past year saw a number of great performances by some new faces. We’ve picked what we think are the top five in the category of Breakout Performance of the Year.

Daniel “Jungleman12″ Cates

When Tom Dwan announced his second Challenge opponent was going to be Daniel “Jungleman12” Cates, you know who the forums picked to win it?  That’s right, the up and comer is the one players believe can outplay Dwan, which makes sense considering Cates is already out to a sizable Challenge lead and is up over $4.4 million online this year.

Sam Chauhan

If Sam Chauhan were a player, his 2010 track record would be the most amazing run in poker history. He’s got a WSOP runner-up finish, countless WPT, WSOP, and NAPT titles, and the mindset coach seems to be on the rail of just about every major event.  The mindset coaches list of clients just keeps growing, as does his players’ bankrolls.

Frank Kassela

At first glance, you wouldn’t think that mild-mannered Southerner Frank Kassela would be tough competition at the tables.  Once you see him play a few hands though, you’ll quickly realize the jovial WSOP Player of the Year is quite the card shark who can excel in both Hold’em and mixed games.

Alexander Kostritsyn

In poker, most players try to find their niche, focusing on cash games or tournaments, Sit-N-Gos or one particular game.  Alexander Kostritsyn is not most players.  The 23 year-old Aussie Millions winner seems to excel at everything he touches, whether it be the $50,000 WSOP Players Championship, the WSOP Main Event, the WCOOP, or the nosebleed cash games.

Tom Marchese

Prior to 2010, the online poker crew may have known who “kingsofcards” was, but the rest of America didn’t know that the man behind the screenname, Tom Marchese, was about to have the breakout year players dream of.  This year alone, Marchese has final tabled WSOP, NAPT, EPT, and WPT events.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Moment of the Year

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. The final category to introduce you to is Moment of the Year featuring some of the biggest

Annie Duke Wins NBC Heads-Up Event

It was a Cinderella story for Annie Duke at the NBC Heads-Up this year as she broke a long streak with no major poker results and did so by beating one of her best friends in the game, Erik Seidel, in the final round.  It couldn’t have been scripted better and it was one of the feel-good moments of the year.

Michael Mizrachi Wins Player’s Championship

If Duke’s win was a feel-good moment, Mizrachi’s victory in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship was a full blown epic tale of redemption.  Grinder’s first bracelet kick-started his improbably WSOP run, culminating in a fifth place finish in the Main Event and causing people to question whether or not he is one of the greatest players ever.

Phil Ivey Wins 8th WSOP Bracelet

Even though Ivey’s been in the WSOP winner’s circle several times before, him winning a bracelet is a feat that never seems to lose its luster.  Maybe the lure of his eighth win might have a little something to do with those rumoured multi-million dollar prop bets though…

Tom Dwan Finishes Runner-Up in WSOP event

In what was certainly the most closely-watched runner up finish in years, Tom Dwan had the entire poker community watching with baited breath as he came up just shy of a WSOP bracelet and winning enough prop bets to potentially break the high stakes world.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Favorite Online Poker Resource

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. Online poker players have lots of tools at their disposal as they grind away. BLUFF has found five nominees for Favorite Online Poker Resource.

CardRunners

Cardrunners may have lost Brian Townsend and Cole south this year, but the library and roster of top instructors just keeps growing.  The site just keeps growing and evolving, adding podcasts and several new features to its mid-year upgrade and, so far, the reaction has been nothing but positive.

HighStakesDB

HighStakesDB is arguably the best place for railbirds to keep track of their favourite cash game pros thanks to the site’s real time results and player tracking.  Combine those real time results with replays of the biggest pots and you’ve got yourself a little piece of railbird heaven.

PokerTableRatings

From the nosebleeds to the microlimits, PokerTableRatings has hand histories, breakdowns and stats to satisfy any appetite. PTR ranks players based on hands played and winnings at each level and each game type across nearly all site. Whether you’re tracking Tom Dwan or the guy sitting to your left in the $0.25/$0.50 game, PTR has your back.

SharkScope

Players have long relied on SharkScope to get the scoop on their SNG competitors, but the site took its database to a whole new level by including live results, including this year’s WSOP. The pros may not love seeing their win rate on display, but poker fans can’t get enough of the new live feature.

ThePokerDB

Not to toot our own horn, but ThePokerDB is still the place to go to get a rundown  of MTTs whether it be your own stats, or the stats of your opponents.  With every stat under the sun, linked screennames across sites, and a comprehensive database of tourney results, it is a must-use application for MTT players.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Favorite California Poker Room

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. We’ve already given you the nominees for Favorite Las Vegas Poker Room and Favorite East Coast Poker Room so that leaves us with California. Here are the nominees:

Bay 101 (San Jose, CA)

This Northern California card room is the top spot in the Bay Area thanks to its focus on poker over table games and the presence of Tournament Director Matt Savage, whose WPT Shooting Star event is a favourite event for pros and fans alike.

The Commerce Casino (Commerce, CA)

The cash game scene at Commerce has always been top notch and this year is no exception.  Add in some of the most lucrative tournament series outside of Las Vegas where even $300 buy-in events can generate $1 million prize pools and you’ve got some of the most lucrative action in the United States.

The Bicycle Casino (Bell Gardens, CA)

The Bike is another LA institution and the only casino in the country that plays host to both WPT and NAPT events.  The cash game action is great too and players often rave about the extensive menu and tableside dining.

Hawaiian Gardens Casino (Hawaiian Gardens, CA)

Craving a late night poker tournament?  How about some small stakes action? Hawaiian Gardens offers recreational players a place to go that isn’t packed with high stakes regs, so even the amateur grinder gets time and attention from the poker room staff.

Hollywood Park Casino (Inglewood, CA)

Just a quick jaunt from LAX, Hollywood Park has become a favourite spot for LA players who don’t want to trek outside of the city to get their poker fix.  With Limit, No Limit, tournament and Sit-N-Go action, there is a little something for everyone at this racetrack and poker room.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Favorite East Coast Poker Room

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. Poker is booming again on the East Coast with properties in New England, New Jersey and the new hotbed of Florida are nominated for Favorite East Coast Poker Room.

The Borgata (Atlantic City)

The crowning jewel of the Atlantic City strip, Borgata boasts one of the biggest poker rooms on the East Coast and the spacious room is always packed with people.  Throw in luxurious rooms and some of the best dining options around and you’ve got one of the best poker environments in the country.

Foxwoods Resort Casino (Mashantucket , Connecticut)

This sprawling casino in the woods of Connecticut features the kinds of cash games players never want to quit.  There is always cash game action to be had and the new High Rollers bowling alley provides a great spot for players to unwind after a day at the tables.

Hard Rock Seminole (Hollywood, Florida)

Once legislation in Florida opened up the cash games, it was only a matter of time before the Hard Rock Seminole became one of the top new poker destinations.  Players are already buzzing about the casino’s spring WPT event and, until then, cash games from $1/$2 to $50/$100 are ripe for the taking.

Mohegan Sun (Uncasville, Connecticut)

Mohegan Sun is on the rise thanks to prominent coverage on ESPN of its NAPT event last spring.  The poker room continues to grow and expand, including offering one of the fastest-growing games on the poker scene—Badugi.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Favorite Las Vegas Poker Room

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. The Strip in Las Vegas is about to get a lot more competitive as five poker rooms vie for The Favorite Las Vegas Poker Room Readers Choice Award.

Aria

It may be the new kid on the strip, but Aria is quickly establishing itself as one of the coolest spots in town for poker players. The online young guns flock to the cash games and the frequent tweeting of Aria Poker Room Ambassador Jean-Robert Bellande ensures there will always be some familiar faces lurking in Ivey’s Room.

The Bellagio

Week in and week out, the poker room at Bellagio is always filled to bursting with everything from $1/$2 to $100/$200. The recent addition of Limit Hold’em machines right outside the poker room only gives grinders even more options, not to mention a way to blow off some steam after a bad beat.

Caesars Palace

The granddaddy of modern day poker rooms, Caesars continues to boast one of the most comfortable and spacious rooms on the strip. The small buy-in tournaments are some of the best deals on the strip and the central location right next to Pure Nightclub is a nice perk as well.

The Venetian

For mid-stakes grinders, there might be no better place to find action than the Venetian. The large room may not get the biggest games in Vegas anymore, but the mid-stakes games run with regularity and the large room features a wide assortment of Limit and No Limit games. Plus, the quarterly Deep Stack Extravaganzas ensure the room is filled to bursting with some of the largest events on the Strip.

Wynn Las Vegas

The Wynn Poker Room screams luxury and its secluded location within the casino means you won’t be listening to ringing slot machines while facing a big decision at the tables.  Those looking for deep stack action also appreciate that there is no cap on the buy-in for all the no limit games.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Favorite Online Poker Room

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. Since PlanetPoker.com first appeared in 1998 poker players have flocked to the web to play. This category breaks your favorite place to play.

Cake Poker Network

The Cake Poker Network just keeps growing with the addition of Victory Poker and the expansion of established sites like DoylesRoom. With Lee Jones at the helm, players can count on a one-on-one customer service experience that they may not find on one of the larger sites.

CEREUS

The Cereus Network, home of AbsolutePoker.com and UB.com, is making a big push to offer users more bang for their buck, cancelling the Aruba Poker Classic in order to add bigger guarantees to events like the UBOC. With several overlays and a large group of recreational players, Cereus is considered one of the most profitable sites to play on.

Full Tilt Poker

Full Tilt continues to establish itself as the place to go for cash games and the recent introduction of Badugi, Draw Games and a new 10 Game Mix format only makes the cash game horizon even juicier.  Whether you’re grinding microstakes or railing nosebleeds, there is a little something for every bankroll.

PokerStars

The largest site in the world, Stars offers users just about every game under the sun, not to mention the most lucrative tournament action there is thanks to major online series like the WCOOP and SCOOP, plus a number of inexpensive satellites to major events like the EPT, NAPT, and WSOP.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Funniest Poker Twitterer

Eight bracelets and 140 characters of funny is one way to sum up Erik Seidel.
Eight bracelets and 140 characters of funny is one way to sum up Erik Seidel.

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. Being funny in 140 characters or less isn’t easy but the poker world has a few comedians on Twitter. Whether you like the x-rated, the blonde jokes or dry wit or just being called “baby” the nominees have got something for you.

Erik Seidel - @ErikSeidel

If they’re going to make a show out of the %!** My Dad Says, then surely we can get a show based on Seidel’s side-splitting tweets, right?  The notoriously quiet Seidel gives the world a glimpse at his sardonic sense of humor with tweets like, “Just found out baseball ripped off poker + had its own World Series event.”

Dan Bilzerian@DanBilzerian

The Victory Poker pro uses his Twitter account to give followers a  peek at his larger-than-life baller lifestyle which includes farm animals, explosives,  and girls (not necessarily at the same time).

Doyle Brunson – @TexDolly

If you’re not a fan of dumb blonde jokes, @TexDolly may not be your cup of tea.  Considering his following is 350,000 people strong, that doesn’t seem to be too big of a problem for Brunson who uses his tweets to poke fun at blondes, Phil Hellmuth, and, most of all, himself.

Mike Matusow - @TheMouthMatusow

While we’d like to see The Mouth learn to use the Caps Lock button, Matusow’s Twitter feed is nonetheless an entertaining compilation of his now-famous zings, sports bets failures, and behind the scenes glimpses of the high stakes poker world.

Scotty Nguyen@TheScottyNguyen

Hate to admit it, but Nguyen’s “Baby” shtick never gets old to us and it certainly doesn’t seem to get old to his more than 10,000 followers. Nguyen averages between 2-3 babies per tweet as he interacts with fans.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Favorite Poker Forum

The 6th Annual BLUFF Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards give poker fans the chance to have their say about who and what they like in the world of poker. Before voting opens on December 6 we’ll introduce each of the nominees in the 14 categories. Long before poker blogs, poker news websites and poker magazines existed poker fans relied on newsgroups and forums for the latest poker info. That’s why the Favorite Poker Forum category is always hotly debated.

TwoPlusTwo.com

The Favorite Poker Forum perennial champ is TwoPlusTwo.com.

BluffMagazine.com

The BLUFF forums offer users more than just a place to discuss what’s going on in our magazine and on our website (which is awesome in its own right), but we’ve also got places to talk home games, poker on TV, and whatever else is on our readers’ minds.

FullContactPoker.com

Daniel Negreanu’s poker forum continues to be a great place to chat with Kid Poker, poker fans, and those looking for advice and ways to improve their game.

PocketFives.com

The new version of PocketFives is a hit with its users who continue to frequent the site’s Poker Discussion forum to talk MTT strategy, rail friends, and even get some tips on how to handle balancing the game and your social life.

Reader’s Choice Nominees: Favorite Poker Blog

That’s why Favorite Poker Blog is always one of the most hotly contested categories each year.

Wicked Chops Pokerwickedchopspoker.com

Tao of Pokertaopoker.blogspot.com

The Hunter S. Thompson of the poker world, Pauly McGuire has become somewhat of a living legend in the poker media.  His book Lost Vegas only cemented his status as one of the most candid and compelling writers covering the poker scene.

Mike Johnson and Adam Schwartz might be the longest running group on this list. Rather than catering to the poker fans who have a casual interest in the faces they see on TV each week the 2+2 Pokercast covers all facets of the poker world including online cash game action, live tournament action and the biggest winners in poker are regular guests.

This Week in Poker – WickedChopsPoker

It's the newest nominee but The PokerStars.net Big Game has turned a lot of heads in a short amount of time.
The PokerStars.net Big Game – FSN

The newest show on this list delivered in its first season with a unique format. High Stakes Poker – GSN

A strong line-up of big name pokers, the addition of Kara Scott (nominated for Favorite Poker Hostess) as hostess and high stakes cash game action have made this show a hit for six seasons now.

Poker After Dark – NBC

The late night/early morning poker show always has a strong cast playing in a winner-take-all $120,000 sit-n-go. Add to that the unique themes for picking each week’s players and you’ve got a TV show that continues to grab viewers.
