The Fight: New Jersey First State to Pass Intrastate Online Gambling Legislation
- Kevin Mathers | January 14, 2011
This week, on The Fight, possibly a new trend for online poker in the US takes hold with the first state to offer intrastate online gambling to their state’s residents only a signature away from occurring.
On January 10, the New Jersey state legislature overwhelming passed Senate Bill S490, a bill that will create the first intrastate online gambling sites in the US. S490 passed in the Assembly by a 63-11-3 vote, while in the Senate the vote was 34-2 in favor. Some of the games offered include poker, craps, roulette, blackjack, slots and baccarat. The bill now moves to Governor Chris Christie’s desk, where it’s unknown if he’ll sign the bill into law. An annual tax of 8% of Internet gross revenues will go into the state’s casino revenue fund, which has been hit hard in recent years by the recession and competition from surrounding states as they add slots and table games. Christie has not publicly stated if he will sign or veto the bill, but the law will go into effect if no decision is made in 45 days. Licenses will be made available to only to companies operating casinos in New Jersey (Caesars’, MGM, Boyd, etc.) with the gambling servers themselves located on casino property. The first online sites are expected to come online later this year.

i think it won’t be long before caesars or mgm makes an offer to buy pokerstars or fulltilt since they seem too stupid and late to enter the online gambling scene, having failed to pass a bill with senator reid.
