There was action from the political, business, and tournament world this week, including an important piece of news on our own personal homefront.  So, let’s get down to business will all the big stories and headlines from the past seven days in this edition of The Week That Was:

Big News For BLUFF Media

We decided to end the week with a bang by announcing our acquisition by Churchill Downs.  This exciting new partnership offers the racing group a chance to branch out into the world of poker and offers BLUFF a chance to join forces with a company with a more than 100 years of success on its record.

Busy Week for the WPT

The World Poker Tour pulled double duty this week, first running a televised event in Venice, Italy, then getting a $3,500 non-televised Main Event going at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.  The Venice Grand Prix drew a smaller than expected 155 players with Russian Rinat Bogdanov taking the title by defeating WPT vets Andrea Dato and Simon Ravnsbaek at the final table.

Before the Venice event wrapped up, action got underway on the Seminole Hard Rock Lucky Hearts Poker Open.  Day 1A drew 125 players, including big stack Jason Mercier, and with another 175 players who played Day 1B on Saturday, the total field size comes in at 295 with the winner taking home $268,444.

Belarus Has an EPT Champion

Early last week, the European Poker Tour also crowned a new champion.  Belrussian Vadzim Kursevich topped the field in the EPT Deauville Main Event to earn more than $1.1 million.  The event also saw Luca Pagano set the record for most EPT final tables.

In the side event action, players like Kevin MacPhee and Matthias de Meulder each picked up victories as well.

Other News and Notes

The Latin American Poker Tour has some new competition, as the Latin Series of Poker revealed plans to launch a live series of events with a tournament in Lima, Peru.

The Washington Post reports that plans for legalized and regulated online poker within the Washington DC area were overturned by a 10-2 vote of the DC Council after several questions arose about the measure and whether or not it was properly vetted before being presented to the Council.

Our deepest condolences go out to Russian poker pro Nikolay Evdakov’s family and friends, as this week he passed away at the age of 46.
