Tournament Tracker: Tim West Bests Tough Wynn Classic Field

Every year the poker pros in Las Vegas relish the opportunity to step away from the televised events, stay at home, and log some time at the Wynn Poker Classic. While this tournament has never been a televised event, it always produces a final table that rivals anything you’ll see on the World Poker Tour and this year is no exception.

This year’s $5,000 buy-in Main Event at the Wynn saw a slight decline in runners with 212 entrants compared to last year’s field of 242, but it was still a star-studded affair. The final table included a ton of online poker pros like Eric Froehlich, Carter King, Matt Waxman, Annette Obrestad, and Tim West, who beat the tough field to claim the top payday of $318,738.

West and Obrestad tangled in a lengthy heads-up battle that pitted two online poker legends against each other. In the end West prevailed, but Obrestad did pick up her biggest score since turning 21 last spring. Obrestad’s beau Scott Montgomery also performed well at this series, picking up a win in the $1,560 preliminary event worth over $47,000 and placed third in a $1,000 event as well for another $16,000.

Another player who had a very impressive run at the Wynn is Chad Brown. Fresh off some serious health issues, Brown proved to be no worse for the wear and picked up a win in one of the two $2,000 buy-in prelim events worth $73,088.

Now that PokerStars and the Wynn have partnered up, one has to wonder if the Wynn Classic might just be an NAPT stop this time next year.

Elsewhere around the poker world, the Unibet Open in Malta wrapped up earlier this month with Mateusz Moolhuizen beating a field of 293 to claim the $163,075 first place prize. The Chicago Poker Classic at the Harrah’s in Hammond also saw a nice turnout with 304 runners in the $3,000 buy-in event. That tournament was taken down by Tommy Koral, who earned over $226,000 for his efforts.

Results from the EPT Snowfest side events were not available this weekend, but we will have those, as well as results from the popular WPT Vienna event in our next edition of tournament tracker.
