Two Weeks Of Hellmuth Coming to NBC’s Poker After Dark
- Jason Kirk | May 4, 2009
NBC’s Poker After Dark is switching things up for the next two weeks with the “Hellmuth Bash,” a six-handed cash game focusing on the one and only Poker Brat.
Phil Hellmuth, the all-time World Series of Poker record holder with 11 bracelets and 69 cashes, will get the chance to prove he’s more than a tournament player over the two-week run of PAD’s “Hellmuth Bash.” He won’t have an easy go of it, though, as he will be facing off with five cash game specialists with plenty of incentive to pick him off and send him on one of his trademark rants. With a $100,000 buy-in, $200/400 blinds, and $100 antes, the session could prove costly if Hellmuth can’t keep himself off tilt.
BLUFF contributors Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak have both made multiple appearances on PAD, but their televised cash game play has previously been limited to GSN’s High Stakes Poker. The Hellmuth Bash will give them a shot at making their cash game mark on PAD at the Brat’s expense.
Tom “durrrr” Dwan has a history with Hellmuth going back to last year’s NBC Heads-Up Championship, when the wonderkid sucked out with T-T against Hellmuth’s A-A on the third hand of their match to eliminate the legend from the proceedings. They also matched up against each other in PAD’s first cash game session in Week 31.
The other two men filling out the lineup are newcomers to PAD, though neither is a stranger to high-stakes action in Los Angeles. Vietnamese-born Kenny “The Kid” Tran has become familiar to poker fans throughout America thanks to his $1,475,316 in winnings at the WSOP, including a victory in last year’s $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em World Championship. Joining Tran will be Bob Safai, a real estate company owner and 10-year veterean of the high-stakes tables in LA who appeared on the fourth season of High Stakes Poker.
The Hellmuth Bash will air on NBC late night beginning tonight at 2:05 a.m. ET and will continue for five consecutive nights in the same time slot, with the “Director’s Cut” airing late night Saturday, May 9, at 1:00 a.m., following Saturday Night Live. The second week of the session will then follow the same schedule beginning next Monday, May 11.
