Vadim Trincher Wins WPT Foxwoods Poker Classic
- Lance Bradley | April 9, 2009
Despite eliminating three of the final five players at the final table Amnon Filippi will have to wait for his first World Poker Tour title. Wednesday night in Connecticut Filippi got as close as possible before finishing as the runner-up to Vadim Trincher at the Foxwoods Poker Classic.
Trincher’s win earned him $731,079 while Filippi walked away with $409,405. The five-handed final table took 221 hands over ten hours. Not surprisingly, Alex Perelberg was eliminated first but he did last 55 hands despite his short stack at the start of the day. Filippi was the one to send Perelberg home in fifith place.
It took another 117 hands for another player to bite the dust. Matt Casterella raised on the button to 160,000, Trincher re-raised from the small blind to 375,000 and Filippi moved all-in from the big blind. Casterella made the call but Trincher threw his cards in the muck. Filippi showed 7

while Casterella flipped over A
K
. The board ran out 9
8
2

and Casterella was eliminated.
The next to go was Lenny Cortellino. From the big blind Filippi called Cortellino’s button raise and the two saw a flop of A
Q
6
. Filippi checked, Cortellino bet 150,000 and Filippi called. The turn came the 8
and Filippi checked again. Cortellino bet 200,000 and Filippi raised to 550,000. Cortellino eventually moved all-in and Filippi snap called. Cortellino tabled A
7
but Filippi showed 8
6
. The river was the K
and Fillipi’s two pair was good enough to take the 3,105,000 pot.
The final hand came just after 2 am ET. Filippi opened with a raise to 175,000 and Trincher called. The flop came J
5
5
, Trincher checked, Filippi bet 300,000 before Trincher raised to 800,000. Amnon responded by moving all-in and Trincher made the call. Amnon was ahead with J
4
but Trincher had a flush draw with 7
6
. The hand was nearly over on the turn as the 8
gave Trincher the flush. When the K
came on the river Filippi failed to make his full house and Trincher was champion.
The win was the first for Trincher and pushed his lifetime earnings over the $1 million mark. For Filippi it was his 10th WPT cash and second final table of the season. The event had only 259 runners and many players, including Filippi, were openly critical of the Foxwoods staff for a poor tournament structure and inadequate staff. The next WPT event is the WPT Championship at Bellagio April 18 - 25.
