WPT: Andy Black Starts Strong at New Ireland Stop

Black is the biggest name in the top ten chip counts

The World Poker Tour (WPT) kicked off the new year with a trip to a new destination: Ireland.  Thursday marked the start of the WPT Ireland Main Event at the CityWest Hotel in Dublin, a €2,500 buy-in event that drew 338 players and generated a prize pool of €760,500.

The event drew a number of notables vying for the top prize of €202,680 along with a seat in the $25,000 WPT Championship in May.  Sam Trickett opted to skip the PCA Super High Roller to stay close to home and several other English and Irish players followed suit, including Barny and Ross Boatman, recent Bellagio WPT winner James Dempsey, Sam Holden, Jake Cody, and Andy Black, who ended the day with one of the top ten chip counts.

Black ended Day 1 with 104,000 chips from the 30,000-chip starting stack.  The player who ended the day on the top of the counts is Irishman David Callaghan, who bagged up 186,900.

Of the 338 players who entered the event, 195 survived to return for Day 2 action on Friday.  McLean Karr, Kara Scott, Leo Margets, Sam El Sayed, and Vladimir Geshkenbein were some of the notables who surivved the day. John Eames, John O’Shea, James Akenhead, Praz Bansi, Padraig Parkinson, WSOP bracelet winner Matt Perrins, and Trickett were some of the players on the long list of Day 1 casualties.

The 195 survivors will be back for another day of action on Friday.  The final table is set to play down to a winner on Sunday.
