German professional Sebastian Homann held the chip lead at the end of day 1a, maintaining the lead the rest of the way to win the €5,000 ($6,606 US) WPT Marrakech tournament, presented by French gaming site ChiliPoker at the Casino de Marrakech in Morocco. The Matt Savage-run tournament drew a field of 222 players–down from 416 in October 2009–over the two opening day 1′s with David Benyamine, Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier, Liz Lieu, Carlos Mortensen, and Antoine Saout were among the notable names entered who finished out of the money.

At the final table, the two most recognizable names were also the top two in chips: Homann and fellow German Dominik “Bounatirou” Nitsche, a winner on the Latin American Poker Tour in 2009. Unfortunately for Nitsche, he was unable to maintain his momentum, knocked out by Homann in 7th place. Meanwhile, Homann continued to add to his chip lead, dispatching several players at the final table to hold a commanding chip lead with three players remaining. Guillaume Cescut was hanging by a thread in third place but he didn’t give up, doubling through Homann and eventually knocking out Sebastien Compte to get to heads-up play at a 2-1 chip disadvantage. Cescut worked his way into the chip lead for a couple of hands, but Homann eventually regained the lead, crippling Cescut once again. Cescut tried once again to rally, doubling up in a series of hands, but it wasn’t enough as Homann’s J-9 outflopped Cescut’s A-4 when the flop came J-4-3, calling Cescut’s all-in bet. The flop and turn blanked out and Homann was the winner, pocketing €244,508 ($322,988 US) along with a WPT Championship seat as Cescut settled for €135,831 ($179,430 US). The next WPT event is the $10,000 Five Diamond Poker Classic at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, running from December 3-8. BLUFF‘s Jess Welman will be on the scene providing daily updates at the conclusion of action each day.
