WPT: Juttelstad Still Leading With 34 Left

It was a long day of action on Day 2 of the World Poker Tour’s Lucky Hearts Poker Open Main Event at the Seminole Hard Rock.  The field began with 112 players and ended with just 34 after six ninety-minute levels of play.  Throughout all that action, one thing remained the same: Matt Juttelstad possessed one of the biggest stacks in the room.

After starting the day on top of the counts with 280,000 chips, Juttelstad only continued to add chips to the pile.  He clashed in a number of big pots but, according to him, he only busted one player all day.  Even without a high number of KOs, Juttelstad still bagged up 805,000 chips, which puts him well above the 260,000-chip average stack.

The only other players close to Juttelstad in the counts are Gigi Gagne and Uri Kadosh who finished with 725,000 and 685,000 chips respectively.  Gagne is the only woman of the five women who entered the event still alive in the tournament.

The bottom half of the top ten counts features some notable names, including 2010 PCA Main Event winner Harrison Gimbel, who finished the day fifth in chips with 456,000.  Raj Vohra also ended strong with 447,500, as did Keith Ferrera, who finished with 321,000.  Other recognizable names remaining in the field include Noah Schwartz (258,000), Jonathan Little (220,000), Darryll Fish (201,000), Justin Zaki (149,000), Christian Harder (115,500), and Fred Goldberg (45,500).

The majority of the big names hit the rail over the course of Day 2 action.  Jason Mercier was poised to win a pot that would make him chip leader when he got it all-in on a queen-high flop holding pocket kings to Angelo Miele’s A-Q, but Miele spiked an ace to make two pair.  Mercier battled back and built his stack up, but failed to survive the day.  Mercier and Miele tangled in a pot where Mercier flopped trips and Miele flopped a flush draw.  They got it all-in on the turn after Miele completed his flush and, when the board failed to pair on the river, Mercier was eliminated.

Others who failed to survive the day include Kathy Liebert, Will Failla, Mohsin Charania, Shannon Shorr, Matt Giannetti, Matt Waxman, Matt Stout, Tristan Wade, Allen Kessler, Shaun Deeb, and Ashton Griffin.

It will be another long day on Monday as the 34 Day 3 players will have to play through the 27-person money bubble and all the way to the six-handed final table, which will stream live on WPT.com on Tuesday.

Here are the top ten chip counts from the end of Day 2 of the Lucky Hearts Poker Open:
