WPT: Lee Markholt Leading Foxwoods Poker Classic

The World Poker Tour’s Foxwoods Poker Classic is now through Day 3 of action and Lee Markholt finds himself in the driver’s seat as the final 17 players prepare to return Monday to play down to the final ten.

Markholt holds 1,118,500 chips and he will be the only player above 1,000,000 as play resumes Monday at Noon ET. Trailing Markholt by nearly 300,000 is Amnon Filippi. Eight players are above the average stack of 457,000; Markholt, Filippi (828,500), Vadim Trincher (730,500), Anthony Gargano (629,500), Barry Greenstein (595,000), Joe Raposa (511,500), Alex Perlberg (510,00) and Lenny Cortellino (500,500).

When the day began Markholt found himself at the other end of the spectrum. Of the 59 players remaining after Day 2 action Markholt was dead last. His rise to the top of the leaderboard came at the expense of five players who were all sent home courtesy of Markholt. Phong Nguyen, David DiFilippo, Dan Heimiller, Charlie Marchese and Jerry Wong all had their tournament ended by the 2008 World Poker Challenge winner.

Jonathan Little who, along with Greenstein, was aiming for a record-tying third WPT title busted out early in the day. David Williams, who began the day in third position with 314,000 only bagged up 258,500 at the end of the night. It was via a double-up courtesy of Williams that Markholt was able to put together his spectacular run.

Action resumes at the Connecticut resort at Noon ET and will continue until the final ten players are left. Those ten will return on Tuesday and play down to the final six. Tournament organizers were unable to play down to the WPT final table as the WPT production team, including the set, will not arrive until Monday. First place will pay $731,079.
