WPT: Nine Remain In Venice, Including American Jason Wheeler
- Jessica Welman | February 9, 2012
It might be a short Day Four for the final nine players in the World Poker Tour Venice Grand Prix Main Event. The field only needs to lose three players before the televised final table is set. With so much on the line though, it might take a while to lose one-third of the field.
When Day 3 action began in Venice on Wednesday, there were still 27 hopefuls and the 18-person money bubble hadn’t burst. The day got off on the wrong foot for the ladies as the final two females in the field, Kara Scott and Carla Solinas, were the first two eliminations of the day. The field continued to thin, and with Lionel Tran’s elimination in 19th place, the final 18 were all guaranteed a payday of at least $9,497.
Even though the field was in the money, it was still slow going in the tournament, with the eliminations few and far between. The lull in the action saw a shift in chips as the start of day chip leader Marcel Bjerkmann toppled from the pole position and busted out in 12th place. James Akenhead, who was the most well known player left in the field, met a similar fate, starting the day in the top five, then busting out in 14th place.
So who does that leave vying for the Italian title? Simon Ravnsbaek, who took third in the Season IX WPT Vienna Main Event, leads the pack with 795,000. Alessandro Longobardi vaulted from near the bottom of the counts to second in chips during the final level of play. He finished the day with 783,000. Andrea Dato, who final tabled the December WPT Venice event, is third in the counts with 726,000.
American Jason Wheeler, better known by his online screenname “JDPC27″, is also still in the field and above average with 699,000 chips. When play resumes on Thursday, blinds will be at 6,000/12,000 ante 2,000.
Here are the chip counts from the end of Day 3 of the WPT Venice Grand Prix:
1. Simon Ravnsbaek – 795,000
2. Alessandro Longobardi – 783,000
3. Andrea Dato – 726,000
4. Jason Wheeler – 699,000
5. Gianluca Trebbi – 474,000
6. Andrea Carini – 430,000
7. Jeremie Sochet – 402,000
8. Rinat Bogdanov – 201,000
9. Massimo Mosele 163,000
