WPT: Rinat Bogdanov Wins Venice Grand Prix
- Jessica Welman | February 11, 2012
When the final table of the World Poker Tour’s Venice Grand Prix, all eyes were on the players with WPT final table experience. Andrea Dato had a big chip lead and a chance to improve upon his fourth place showing in the December WPT Venice event. Simon Ravnsbaek gained experience after finishing third at WPT Vienna last season and had the second biggest stack to start the day.
It would not be a chance for Dato or Ravnsbaek to redeems themselves though. Instead, it was a breakout performance for Russin Rinat Bogdanov, who stealthily navigated his way through past his experienced competitors and end up with a WPT title and over $300,000 in cash and prizes.
Bogdanov began the day third in chips behind Dato and Ravnsbaek, but managed to hold onto his chips while the two vets clashed in several big pots. Short stacks Andrea Carini and Gianluca Trebbi exited early in sixth and fifth respectively, then it Ravnsbaek who was the next to fall.
Despite holding the chip lead with four players left, Ravnsbaek hit the rail after being on the losing end of several big hands, Ravnsbaek shoved with pocket deuces only to run into Bogdanov’s pocket tens. Dato fell next, losing a flip to Alessandro Longobardi to exit in third place.
That left the Italian Longobardi up against the Russian Bogdanov for the title. The heads-up match lasted all of two hands. Bogdanov flopped bottom pair on a [Qh7d4d] and improved to two pair when the turn brought the 6
, then shoved all-in over the top of a bet from Longobardi on the river when the 4
improved Bogdanov to a full house. Longobardi called with [KhQd] for two pair and the tournament came to an abrupt close.
Bogdanov earns €229,800 for his victory, an amount that includes his $25,500 seat into the WPT Championship in May. Longobardi earns €111,700 for the runner-up finish.
As the Venice final table wrapped up, the next WPT event got underway in Hollywood, Florida, where Day 1A of the $3,500 Lucky Hearts Poker Open drew 125 runners.
Here are the final table results from the WPT Venice Grand Prix:
1st: Rinat Bogdanov – $302,065
