WPT: Von Kriegenbergh and Rettenmaier Thriving After Day 2

von Kriegenbergh has earned over $1.3 million already this year

The Main Event of World Poker Tour Venice only has two days in the books, but the field is already down to the final 40 players.  After beginning the day with 95 runners, over half the field hit the rail, including reigning past WPT Venice champ Alessio Isaia, EPT winner Zimnan Ziyard, Roger Hairabedian, and Dominik Nitsche.

While those players headed home early, two Boston boys made their way up the chip counts.  WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown winner Taylor von Kriegenbergh had a huge day at the tables.  After dipping as low as 30,000 chips, von Kriegenbergh ended the day third in the counts with 326,900.  The bulk of von Kriegenbergh’s chips came from a giant three-way all-in where von Kriegenbergh’s AQ bested his opponents’ AK and QJ to rake in a 325,00-chip pot and send him flying up the counts.

Fellow East Coaster Ronnie Bardah began the day near the top of the counts and steadily built his stack over the course of the day.  He finished with an above average 225,000, which is good enough to put him eighth in the counts.  American Steve O’Dwyer is not too far behind Bardah in the counts with 197,900.

Both O’Dwyer and Marvin Rettenmaier are in the hunt for this year’s BLUFF Player of the Year title.  Unfortunately for both, a victory in this tournament will not automatically guarantee them the top spot.  Should Rettenmaier win the event, he will still trail Katchalov by six points.  If O’Dwyer wins, he will move to third in the ranks.

Rettenmaier is in great shape to potentially make his first WPT final table.  He ended Day 2 second in chips behind chip leader Wanny Piazza.  Piazza bagged up 373,500, while Rettenmaier ended with 330,000.

Day 3 will likely see the 40 survivors burst the 27-person money bubble.  A mincash in this event is worth $7,509.  The winner will take home a $255,842, which includes a $25,500 seat in the WPT Championship at Bellagio.

Here are the top ten chip counts from the end of Day 2 of WPT Venice:

1. Wanny Piazza – 373,500
2. Marvin Rettenmaier – 330,000
3. Taylor von Kriegenbergh – 326,900
4. Andrea Dato – 282,500
5. Michele Caroli – 279,000
6. Fernando Cimaglia – 266,200
7. Johan Guilbert – 233,000
8. Ronnie Bardah – 225,000
9. Alejandro Sanchez – 217,400
10. Steve O’Dwyer – 197,900
