WSOP: Angel Guillen - Mexico’s Gold Star
- Diana Cox | June 18, 2009
In a field that started with 1,534 players Angel Guillen was the last man standing Wednesday night in the $2,000 No Limit Hold ‘em event at the 2009 World Series of Poker.
Guillen beat Mika Paasonen, of Finland, after five hours of heads-up play, to take home top prize of $530,548 and a WSOP gold bracelet. Guillen is only the second WSOP bracelet winner in history to hail from Mexico.
“It is a dream come true,” Gullien said. “I have wanted to be professional poker player all my life.”
Clark Hamagami was the first to be sent to the rail when the action folded around to Guillen in the small blind. Guillen moved all in for 650,000 with A
K
, Hamagami called all-in with 450,000 holding A

. A flop of K
8
J
gave Guillen top pair and left Hamagami hoping for one of the two remaining eights. The Q
on the turn lessened his chances of hitting a set and the A
on the river gave Guillen top two pair. Hamagami made his fifth cash of the Series for $55,279.
Antoine Amourette left the table in eighth with $61,421 when he moved all-in pre-flop from the cut off with Q
J
. Eric Ladny made the call from the big blind and turned over pocket twos. The board ran out A

, giving Ladny two pair and the Frenchman nothing.
Seventh place and $71,192 went to Chris MacNeil. Holding K
Q
MacNeil raised to 100,000 pre-flop and was called by Paasonen. MacNeil moved all-in and Paasonen, holding A
Q
immediately made the call once again. The board played out 3

J
giving Paasonen the better hand with an ace kicker.
MacNeil was followed to the rain immediately by Daniel Makowsky in sixth. Makowsky pushed his short stack into the middle on the button and was called by Steve Kohner in the big blind. Makowsky turned over 3

and Kohner showed A
K
. The board ran out K

, sending Makowsky away with $86, 548.
Ladny was eliminated in fifth after beginning the day with one of the larger chip stacks. Ladny saw the end of his tournament life when he ran his pocket Jacks into Guillen’s K
[10c]. Guillen flopped a King and a ten and the turn and the river did nothing to improve Ladny’s Jacks. He left with $108, 883.
Kohner was the next victim of Guillen when he raised pre-flop to 120,000. Guillen set him in from the big blind and Kohner instantly made the call. Guillien flipped over A
K
and Kohner showed J

pQs], with pocket Jacks falling victim to Guillen for the second time in less than 20 minutes. Kohner recieved $150, 761 for his efforts at the final table.
Jason Boyes was sent packing in third when he raised to 150,000 from the button and was called by Paasonen. After a flop of 8

Boyes raised to 200,000 and Paasonen re-raised to 600,000. Boyes then moved all-in for 1,530,000. Paasonen thought about it for nearly five minutes before making the call. Boyes flipped over [10d] 8
and Paasonen showed A

. The turn brought the 9
, but it was the river that ended Boyes’s run at the bracelet. The A
flipped over giving Paasonen two pair. Boyes was sent to the cash cage to collect $214, 974.
